Voter ID Gets Real

No stay of execution for the Voter ID law.

It seems the Voter ID law will be in effect for this election.  While I am against this law and feel the judge could have at least postponed its official implementation until the next primary when there is limited turnout, it is what it is now. Since getting all the poll workers in PA to boycott the election is only a fantasy fit for the movies, I will now turn to one of my go-to sayings, "if at first you don't succeed, improvise".

I am again volunteering to help anyone who needs it, assistance filling out the appropriate forms to get ID and will drive them to the nearest Photo ID center, probably Media, before the election.  Please contact me through Patch.

As much as I will hate to say "your papers please", I have also decided to again work this election as the majority inspector, instead of quitting.  I will take anyone who has to fill in a provisional ballot to Norristown along with their necessary documents so their vote will count. I feel I can do more good doing that than being arrested for not enforcing the law.  My son is the constable at our polling place so he would have to be the one to place me in custody.

So be prepared for voting to take substantially longer in November.

While we did a cursory check of ID during the primary, since there is a $10,000 fine and a year in prison penalty for poll workers who do not enforce the law, we will be looking a lot closer at those IDs. Also, people who do not have IDs will have the option to fill out a provisional ballot which will take a poll worker away from checking IDs.

Combine that with the higher turnout for a presidential election and you better leave a bit more time for voting.  Please help us out and at least have your ID ready and please be patient with us.

Please note, any valid ID needs an expiration date and the name needs to match; newlyweds be warned. The only IDs that can be expired are the PA photo ID or the PA driver's license, but only by less than a year.  Most of the so-called acceptable IDs in the law do not have expiration dates, so therefore are not acceptable.

Any complaints can be directed to Gov. Corbett, 717-787-2500.
