LA Fitness was granted zoning approval to occupy the Borders building in Wynnewood Shopping Center earlier this year.
There's still no word on when, or if, LA Fitness will take over the former Borders space in Wynnewood Shopping Center, currently occupied by Bargain Book Warehouse. A representative of Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of Wynnewood Shopping Center, said this week that they have nothing firm to announce yet regarding a lease with LA Fitness, which had expressed interest in opening a 24/7 "upscale, signature" fitness center in the old Borders building. Federal Realty and LA Fitness spent more than six months in discussion with neighboring civic associations and Lower Merion's Zoning Hearing Board, culminating in the Zoning Hearing Board's decision in January that LA Fitness would be permitted to occupy the Borders building, but …

The school district also obtained approval for a renovation plan.
Lower Merion's Planning Commission on Monday night voted to recommend more restrictive hours of operation and outside-music policies at a Wynnewood property where Federal Realty wants to open a restaurant. The applicants are looking to attract a restaurateur to the space and had been hoping to have permits in place to allow hours of operation as late as 2 a.m. However, residents of the Shortridge and Wynnewood civic associations have objected to the prospect of late night visitors to the Wynnewood Shopping Center and of outdoor music in the evenings. Previously: With No Tenant Named, Wynnewood Restaurant Plans Are Unclear (Feb. 1, 2013) The Planning Commission voted to send the preliminary land development plan along to the Board of …

The space is being heavily marketed, and would ideally be open until 2 a.m., according to Federal Realty's development manager.
A restaurant tenant has yet to be identified for the vacant postal service spot in the Wynnewood Shopping Center, but nearby residents are eager for details as the center’s owners move forward with a basic plan for the space. Federal Realty Investment Trust met with Shortridge Civic Association Tuesday night to present rudimentary plans for the demolition of the existing postal service building and the construction of a 6,500-square foot restaurant in the old postal space next to Giant. While no lease for the space has been signed, Federal Realty is moving through the Lower Merion Township land development process in hopes that securing necessary approvals ahead of time will make the space more attractive to potential tenants. Federal …

The Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board approved the gym's conditional use request on Thursday.
A plan to build an upscale, "signature" LA Fitness in the Wynnewood Shopping Center is, after six months and much discussion, taking a step forward. Thursday night, the Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board approved a conditional use application to permit a gym use in the old Borders building, currently occupied by Bargain Book Warehouse. In their presentation in July, LA Fitness and Federal Realty Investment Trust, owners of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, had requested that the gym be permitted to operate 24/7, a request neighboring civic associations took issue with. In the intervening months, Wynnewood and Shortridge Civic Associations and attorney Ken Aaron had fought for the gym to limit its hours of operation—a condition to which LA …

The Wynnewood restaurant, in business for 16 years, closed for the last time on Friday.
And just like that, a Wynnewood staple is no more: after 16 years in Lower Merion, Sam's Grill shut its doors for the last time on Friday night. The 2,417-foot space, located in the Wynnewood Shopping Center, is listed as available on the Federal Realty website. "Thank you," reads a sign on the restaurant's door, in bold lettering. The sign continues: Thank you to all of our devoted customers, neighbors and friends for 16 wonderful years at Sam’s Grill. We will miss seeing you and your families and hope that you’ll join us at our Center City locations, Devil’s Alley and Smokin’ Betty’s. Have a happy and healthy New Year! While the restaurant previously had a red scrawling "Sam's Grill" sign above its storefront, the lettering has been gone…

A manager expected Bargain Book Warehouse to open by early next week.
As Federal Realty and LA Fitness continue to present their case before the Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board, another business has moved into the space the gym hopes to eventually occupy. Bargain Book Warehouse plans to open as soon as early next week in the Wynnewood Shopping Center's old Borders building, said co-manager Arturo Garcia. The bargain bookstore, which will offer both new releases and older books, will eventually occupy both floors of the old Borders building. But for the moment, as Spirit Halloween finishes moving out, Bargain Books will open just the second floor, Garcia said. The building has attracted several short-term tenants since the Borders chain closed last year: first a Halloween store, then a discount furniture …

More than 50 people attended Monday night's Zoning Hearing Board meeting.
After a three hour meeting on Monday night, attended by more than 50 people, the issue of whether LA Fitness can operate a 24/7 fitness center in the Wynnewood Shopping Center has still not been resolved. The hearing will be continued on Sept. 20. Federal Realty Investment Trust, owners of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, came before the Zoning Hearing Board in July to request a special exception allowing a fitness center use in the shopping center's old Borders space. Specifically, LA Fitness would construct an upscale Signature Club in the building, with better amenities and higher membership fees than a typical LA Fitness, said Chad Abramo, LA Fitness vice president, at the July 12 meeting. At the July meeting, Abramo also requested that …
A Halloween costume shop has temporarily moved into the old Wynnewood Borders space.
It might still be a few months before Halloween, but a new store at the Wynnewood Shopping Center will help you get an early start on selecting the perfect costume. Spirit Halloween has moved into the old Borders spot, and has signed a lease that will run from Sept. 10 to Nov. 10, according to Federal Realty representative Andrea Simpson. Until recently, the building was occupied by Affordable Home Furnishings. The discount furniture store moved in last November and had in recent months been prominently displaying a banner stating that they'd lost their lease. Heidi Tirjan, Lower Merion retail coordinator, told Patch in a previous interview that Affordable Home Furnishings had been on a month-to-month lease. Last year, before Affordable …

LA Fitness has proposed to use the space. What do you want to see there?
Wynnewood Shopping Center's old Borders Bookstore space, closed last year, now houses Affordable Home Furnishings. The furniture store, however, is on a month-to-month lease, according to Heidi Tirjan, Lower Merion retail coordinator. Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of Wynnewood Shopping Center, came before Lower Merion Township's Zoning Hearing Board in July, with plans to turn the old Borders space into an upscale LA Fitness. The hearing was continued, then postponed, at the request of Federal Realty. Assuming the continuation of the hearing goes on as planned, representatives of Federal Realty and LA Fitness will appear before the Zoning Hearing Board on Monday, Aug. 20 at 7:15 p.m. Do you want to see an LA Fitness in this …

Thank you Beth for backing up my comment and I agree with you 100%. If BBW can't stay at that location isn't there somewhere else close by to move into? I am a tactile person and I like to feel, hold and look at books before I buy them. Books are to be treasured and worshipped- just like the local organic produce ( sorry to stray off the topic).   more ›
