Wynnewood Photo Location Revealed

Find out the history of the location pictured in a photo taken in 1935.

On Monday, we asked readers to identify the location of a 1935 photo taken somewhere in the Ardmore-Merion-Wynnewood Patch area. As one reader correctly guessed, the photo was taken at 6 E Lancaster Ave. in Wynnewood—most recently Palmer Seminary. At the time the photo was taken, however, the pictured building was known as the Green Hill Farms Hotel, a luxury hotel built in 1919. The property was sold to Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (later Palmer Seminary) in 1939. In an op-ed piece in 1939, a reader wrote to the Ardmore Chronicle that she had visited some "delightful banquets and dances in the ballroom, enjoying lunches and dinners on the open air terrance. We even spent an entire summer there some years ago with three or four …

Historical Photo Location Revealed: Maybrook

The Main Line mansion, also known as the Merriam Estate, was built in 1881.

On Monday, we asked readers to identify the location of an undated photo taken somewhere in the Ardmore-Merion-Wynnewood Patch area. As two readers correctly guessed, the photo is of Maybrook, a Wynnewood estate built in 1881. Located at 331 Penn Road and officially known as the Merriam Estate, the mansion has close to 40 rooms, including a two-story ballroom. The original property contained 67 acres, but after passing to the owner's daughter, "the corner at Wynnewood Road and the railroad tracks was sold for the Thomas Wynne apartment building, enabling 220 more families to enjoy the woodsy grounds," according to Montgomery County: The Second Hundred Years. Last year, Ardmore Patch featured Maybrook in a two-part profile on the estate's …

1900 Photo Location Revealed

Learn about the history of this Ardmore location.

Last Monday, we asked readers to identify the location of a 1900 photo taken somewhere in Ardmore. We had no guesses ventured in the comments section, but two readers who sent their guesses via email identified the location correctly: Monday's photo was taken at the site of the old Ardmore Public School on Ardmore Avenue. The Ardmore Public School building was built in 1876 at the intersection of Ardmore Avenue and School Lane. From 1894 to 1910, it served as both an elementary school and Lower Merion's first high school, according to the Lower Merion Historical Society. Monday's photo depicts the building as it looked once destroyed by fire in 1900; the school was rebuilt the following year and torn down in 1967. Now what stands at this …

Penn Wynne Photo Location Revealed

Find out the history of this building.

Last week, we asked readers to identify the location of a photo taken somewhere in Penn Wynne before 1950.  As two readers guessed correctly, the photo was taken at the previous location of Penn Wynne Library, at Manoa Rd. and Henley Rd. in Penn Wynne. The building was the home of Penn Wynne Library from 1929 to 1949. A residential home now stands on the property. In 1929, according to the Penn Wynne Library website: ... an ambitious group of women collected 35 books and raised $7.00 at a Book Tea in Penn Wynne. These strong-minded women arranged to start a library in a local real estate office, getting their sons to mow the lawn, their husbands to paint the shutters and local merchants to repair the roof. They held card parties to raise …

Ardmore Photo Location Revealed

Find out where and when last week's photo was taken.

On Monday, we asked readers to identify the location and time period of a photo taken somewhere in Ardmore. Although the two guesses we received both conjectured that the photo was of the Autocar Factory, the photo was actually taken at the Lower Merion Public Works building, located at the corner of County Line Rd. and Lippincott Ave. in Ardmore. The Autocar Factory guess wasn't too far off, though: the dump truck pictured is a 1930s Autocar model, according to a comment on the Lower Merion Historical Society website. The Public Works building was erected in 1935, according to a building plaque; it has been used for the storage of Public Works equipment and vehicles for more than 75 years. Check back Monday for a new historical photo …
