Montco Could Become the Hotbed for 2014 Governor Race

Two politicians from the county may face-off in a race for the state's seat.

Of course, nothing is set in stone just yet, but with phrases like "80 percent sure" and "pragmatism and practicality" being floated around, it is possible that Montgomery County may be home to a hot race in the 2014 Pennsylvania governor's race. Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor has not put a percentage on his desire to enter the race, but has said he is keeping a close eye on the current governor, Tom Corbett's actions in the second half of his term. "I'm not going to run just to make a splash. I want Pennsylvania to go down the right path," Castor said in an interview with Pennsylvania Cable Network, covered by Patch in January. "I want Pennsylvania to be a conservative state, but with pragmatism and practicality. I don't see …

Corbett's Approval Drops to 36 Percent

Fewer Pennsylvanians think Gov. Tom Corbett is doing a good job

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent  HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett hit an all-time low this week. Thirty-six percent of voters approve of the way the first-term governor and former Pennsylvania attorney general is doing his job, compared with 47 percent who disapprove, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.   Do you approve of the governor's job performance? Vote in our poll and tell us in the comments section below. But these figures don’t bother Corbett — he doesn’t read polls, he said. “If I was looking at the polls, I wouldn’t be doing some of the things I’m doing, would I?” Corbett said.  The poll queried 997 registered voters from June 5-10 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. Corbett's approval …

Local Representatives React to Gov. Corbett's Budget Proposal

State Rep. Tim Briggs called it "the same destructive blueprint" as Corbett's first budget.

Gov. Tom Corbett presented his budget proposal to both houses of the state legislature Tuesday and, as expected, it reflects the state’s difficult financial situation. There are plenty of cuts to address the state’s revenue shortfall, but it does not include any tax increases. In fact, Corbett said he would work with lawmakers on the budget but said tax increases were not an option. Asked by Patch for comment, Rep. Pam DeLissio, whose district overlaps Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, criticized the administration's approach. "It's a difficult economic climate, no one disagrees with that. But what I hear pretty universally is the administration has made decisions that have caused problems," DeLissio said. "Their decision process …

Poll: Should Pennsylvania Get Out of the Booze Business?

State Republicans are making plans to privatize the liquor industry in the Keystone State.

Should Pennsylvania let private businesses sell alcohol? That's the question state lawmakers will be pondering in the coming months as legislation that would privatize the liquor industry in the state appears to be gaining momentum. A vestige of Prohibition, Pennsylvania is one of 18 states that exercise control of all or most aspects of wine and liquor sales and, next to Utah, the one that keeps the tightest grip on operations. But now, at the urging of House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-28) and with the endorsement of a just-released report commissioned by Gov. Tom Corbett, the idea of relinquishing this control appears to be getting traction in Harrisburg, though Ardmore's state senator and representative have their own reservations…

If the state got out of the liquor business then where would all the schizophrenics and mentally ill people find jobs? When was the last time you were in a PA liquor store? The employees are a motley bunch. I always wondered what ever became of the kids from high school who were playing dungeons and dragons and the ones who did Live Action Role Play. Apparently they were given jobs for the …   more ›
