A fence around each Pennsylvania school? David Lu thinks it 'ought to be a law.'
Ah, the wisdom of children. David Lu, a fifth grader at Penn Valley Elementary, recently won Rep. Tim Briggs' annual "There Ought to be a Law" essay contest with a proposal on school safety. Lu suggested a law that would secure all school entrances, install fences along school property, and mandate all students and staff participate in regular safety drills. Lu's essay was selected from over 400 submissions. Briggs, who attended a recent Lower Merion School Board of Directors meeting to present David and the other finalists with an official citation from the state house celebrating their accomplishment, said the annual contest provides him with a valuable reminder: his constituents include children, as well as grownups. “I represent 62,000…

The Lower Merion boys basketball team visited the state House last week.
The view from the top, so far, has been pretty good for the Aces. A month after the team won the PIAA Boys Basketball AAAA state championship over rival Chester by a 63-47 score, the team was invited to the state House of Representatives, where they were recognized by Rep. Tim Briggs (D-Montgomery). The Aces, including the team's coaching staff, were invited to the House floor during the April 24 session, where Reps. Pam DeLissio and Mary Jo Daley were also on-hand to recognize the group. Briggs applauded the group for toppling a Chester team that had blown them out in the state finals the previous spring. “I am so proud of the Aces for defeating a team that had won 78 games in a row over three years against Pennsylvania opponents. It was …

A judge blocked the new polling-place requirement Tuesday.
State legislators representing Lower Merion and Narberth, Democrats all, expressed relief Tuesday after a judge effectively blocked Pennsylvania's voter identification requirement for this year's general election. Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery, Delaware): "I was elated. This is a victory not only for the voters of Pennsylvania, but for everyone who fought for civil rights and voting rights for the past 100 years in America. It ends the most cynical attempt at voter suppression we've ever seen in the state where democracy was born." Rep. Pam DeLissio (D-194): "I have said pretty consistently throughout, I don't have a problem protecting the integrity of the vote. But trying to do this monumental task in under eight months was just not a …

Reps Tim Briggs and Mike Gerber and Sen. Daylin Leach all scored 100 percent in their handling of 'The Shale.'
Ardmore, evidently, knows the environment. In the wake of the controversial omnibus Marcellus Shale bill Governor Tom Corbett signed into law on Feb. 14, environmental groups Conservation Voters of PA, Penn Environment, Clean Water Action and the Sierra Club distributed a scorecard grading environmental soundness of each state legislator’s voting record. By their reckoning, Ardmore’s legislators came out all aces. Reps Tim Briggs (D-149) and Mike Gerber (D-148), and Senator Daylin Leach (D-17), each scored a 100 percent on the March 27 evaluation—voting in accordance with environmental principles in each of the eight discrete votes that led to the bill. Of Montgomery County’s 23 state legislators, eight garnered perfect marks. In a …

State Rep. Tim Briggs called it "the same destructive blueprint" as Corbett's first budget.
Gov. Tom Corbett presented his budget proposal to both houses of the state legislature Tuesday and, as expected, it reflects the state’s difficult financial situation. There are plenty of cuts to address the state’s revenue shortfall, but it does not include any tax increases. In fact, Corbett said he would work with lawmakers on the budget but said tax increases were not an option. Asked by Patch for comment, Rep. Pam DeLissio, whose district overlaps Philadelphia and Lower Merion Township, criticized the administration's approach. "It's a difficult economic climate, no one disagrees with that. But what I hear pretty universally is the administration has made decisions that have caused problems," DeLissio said. "Their decision process …
