No Firm Plans Yet For LA Fitness, Bargain Books

LA Fitness was granted zoning approval to occupy the Borders building in Wynnewood Shopping Center earlier this year.

There's still no word on when, or if, LA Fitness will take over the former Borders space in Wynnewood Shopping Center, currently occupied by Bargain Book Warehouse. A representative of Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of Wynnewood Shopping Center, said this week that they have nothing firm to announce yet regarding a lease with LA Fitness, which had expressed interest in opening a 24/7 "upscale, signature" fitness center in the old Borders building. Federal Realty and LA Fitness spent more than six months in discussion with neighboring civic associations and Lower Merion's Zoning Hearing Board, culminating in the Zoning Hearing Board's decision in January that LA Fitness would be permitted to occupy the Borders building, but …

Thank you Beth for backing up my comment and I agree with you 100%. If BBW can't stay at that location isn't there somewhere else close by to move into? I am a tactile person and I like to feel, hold and look at books before I buy them. Books are to be treasured and worshipped- just like the local organic produce ( sorry to stray off the topic).   more ›

Wynnewood LA Fitness Project Moves Ahead

The Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board approved the gym's conditional use request on Thursday.

A plan to build an upscale, "signature" LA Fitness in the Wynnewood Shopping Center is, after six months and much discussion, taking a step forward. Thursday night, the Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board approved a conditional use application to permit a gym use in the old Borders building, currently occupied by Bargain Book Warehouse. In their presentation in July, LA Fitness and Federal Realty Investment Trust, owners of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, had requested that the gym be permitted to operate 24/7, a request neighboring civic associations took issue with. In the intervening months, Wynnewood and Shortridge Civic Associations and attorney Ken Aaron had fought for the gym to limit its hours of operation—a condition to which LA …

I was also hoping for a more "upscale" kind of gym. Not 100% thrilled with the decision. However it is still giving Lower Merion a new place to workout and I am sure the facility will be quite impressive nevertheless.   more ›

LA Fitness Hearing Postponed, Again

A new date for the hearing has not yet been set, but in the meantime, neighboring civics and the shopping center owners may dialogue.

Thursday night's hearing regarding plans to turn Wynnewood Shopping Center's old Borders space into an LA Fitness has been postponed, according to an email from Lower Merion Zoning Officer Michael Wylie. Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, presented their request for a variance allowing a fitness center use at the July 12 meeting of the Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board. The previous Borders space, now occupied by Spirit Halloween, would become an upscale, "signature" LA Fitness, the first in eastern Pennsylvania. Read more about the proposed fitness center, including photos of tentative floor plans, here. At the following LA Fitness hearing on Aug. 20, neighboring civic associations Shortridge and…

Wynnewood LA Fitness Hearing Continued

More than 50 people attended Monday night's Zoning Hearing Board meeting.

After a three hour meeting on Monday night, attended by more than 50 people, the issue of whether LA Fitness can operate a 24/7 fitness center in the Wynnewood Shopping Center has still not been resolved. The hearing will be continued on Sept. 20. Federal Realty Investment Trust, owners of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, came before the Zoning Hearing Board in July to request a special exception allowing a fitness center use in the shopping center's old Borders space. Specifically, LA Fitness would construct an upscale Signature Club in the building, with better amenities and higher membership fees than a typical LA Fitness, said Chad Abramo, LA Fitness vice president, at the July 12 meeting. At the July meeting, Abramo also requested that …

Wynnewood's Old Borders Space: What Should Move In?

LA Fitness has proposed to use the space. What do you want to see there?

Wynnewood Shopping Center's old Borders Bookstore space, closed last year, now houses Affordable Home Furnishings. The furniture store, however, is on a month-to-month lease, according to Heidi Tirjan, Lower Merion retail coordinator. Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of Wynnewood Shopping Center, came before Lower Merion Township's Zoning Hearing Board in July, with plans to turn the old Borders space into an upscale LA Fitness. The hearing was continued, then postponed, at the request of Federal Realty. Assuming the continuation of the hearing goes on as planned, representatives of Federal Realty and LA Fitness will appear before the Zoning Hearing Board on Monday, Aug. 20 at 7:15 p.m. Do you want to see an LA Fitness in this …

LA Fitness Hearing Postponed

At the request of the applicant, Thursday's hearing has been rescheduled for Aug. 20.

The continuation of a hearing regarding LA Fitness's potential move into  Wynnewood Shopping Center has been postponed to Aug. 20, according to Zoning Hearing Board secretary Michael Wylie. The continued hearing was originally scheduled for Thursday night. Federal Realty Investment Trust, the owners of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, presented their request for a variance allowing a fitness center use at the July 12 meeting of the Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board. The previous Borders space, now occupied by Affordable Home Furnishings, would become an upscale, "signature" LA Fitness, the first in eastern Pennsylvania. LA Fitness Eyes Wynnewood Shopping Center For Upscale, 'Signature' Gym

The gym, proposed for the former Borders space, would like the option to be a 24-hour facility.

An upscale, pricier LA Fitness—complete with amenities like towel service and a whirlpool—might be coming to Wynnewood Shopping Center if granted zoning relief.  The 'Signature' LA Fitness would be the first of its kind in eastern Pennsylvania, according to Chad Abramo, LA Fitness vice president. Federal Realty, the owner of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, went before the Lower Merion Zoning Hearing Board on Thursday night to seek a special exception that would allow a fitness center use in the former Borders space. Currently, the C-1 space is occupied by Affordable Home Furnishings, which Lower Merion retail coordinator Heidi Tirjan told Patch last month was on a month-to-month lease. "We want a long-term, solid tenant, and we’re excited …

Restaurant, Bank Proposed for Wynnewood Shopping Center

Federal Realty proposed two options for filling a vacant shopping center space at the Planning Commission meeting on Monday.

The Wynnewood Shopping Center may soon be gaining a new business for its vacant postal service building—if it can find a tenant. Federal Realty Investment Trust, the shopping center’s owner, presented two tentative sketch plans to the Lower Merion Planning Commission on Monday night: one for a restaurant with outdoor seating, and one for a bank with two drive-through lanes. Both are options that could occupy the space where the vacant postal service building now stands. David Joss, vice president of Federal Realty, told the Planning Commission that the company has had difficulty marketing the property to potential tenants. “The building has been vacant for quite some time,” Joss said.  “We’ve been marketing the vacant building to everyone …
