AAA: 93 Million to Travel for the Holidays

Millions will travel more than 50 miles for Christmas and New Year’s this year. See how many of them are from the Philadelphia area.

More than 1 million travelers from the Philadelphia area (or one in four) will travel 50 miles or more away from home during the year-end holidays, according the AAA Mid-Atlantic. That’s an increase of nearly 2 percent over last year.  The year-end holiday travel period is defined as Saturday, Dec. 22 to Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.  AAA Mid-Atlantic’s holiday travel forecast is based on travelers’ intentions and historical data as of mid-November. “Despite high gas prices and slow economic recovery, more than 25 percent of Philadelphia area residents (over 1 million people) plan to travel during the upcoming 11-day holiday travel season,” said Jenny M. AAA: Watch for Falling Gas Prices

As millions of people take to the roads for the Thanksgiving holiday, many travelers will be filling up their gas tank.

The following is provided by AAA: $86.92 per barrel (at Friday's close) $86.07 per barrel $102.59 per barrel In the immediate aftermath of Sandy, power outages in New York and New Jersey left many stations unable to operate pumps, despite gasoline in their storage tanks.  As power is restored to the region and distribution and resupply issues are being resolved, more and more gas stations are becoming operational.  Early in the week, Governor Christie (NJ) lifted gas rationing and by week’s end, both New York and New Jersey saw gas stations return to 85 to 90 percent operational. Wednesday Expected to be Busiest Travel Day

Find out what AAA has to say about hotel and car rental rates this holiday.

The following is provided by AAA: The Thanksgiving holiday is unique falling on a Thursday every year. Many people are off from work the Friday after, giving travelers the opportunity to spend more time with family and friends.   AAA asked intended travelers which days they would depart for and return from Thanksgiving Travel. Among those surveyed, the majority of travelers plan to leave the Wednesday before the holiday (45 percent) and return the following Sunday (36 percent) with another 25 percent expecting to return on Monday, Nov. 26. AAA Predicts 43.6 Million Thanksgiving Travelers

Information provided by AAA: AAA projects 43.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, an increase of 0.7 percent over the 43.3 million people who traveled last year. This increase marks the fourth consecutive year of growing holiday travelers since 2008 when Thanksgiving travel fell by 25 percent. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25.
