Statistics released Tuesday from the state Department of Health show flu cases continue to rise locally and across Pennsylvania.
The number of flu cases in the Delaware Valley and throughout Pennsylvania spiked in early January as health officials continue to deal with one of the worst flu outbreaks in years. The state reported this week that there were 18 more influenza-related deaths, bringing to 22 the total number of flu-related deaths this season. The state Health Department website did not indicate the counties where the deaths occurred. Most of the reported deaths were among those 65 and older, but two of the people who died were "otherwise healthy" people under age 50, the state health officials said. If you haven't gotten your flu shot, now is the time.
If you’ve been feeling under the weather lately, you’re not alone. Flu season is hitting the Delaware Valley. “Local hospitals, including Bryn Mawr and Paoli, are seeing a spike in respiratory illnesses,” Tweets Main Line Health. Our area is not alone. “The U.S. is experiencing an early flu season,” Tweets FluGov, the federal government’s main flu information website. Flu symptoms, according to Flu.gov, include: Doctors say that the best way to prevent getting the flu is a flu shot. Check with your doctor’s office or local pharmacy. A number of Main Line area Rite Aid stores are currently out of the vaccine or low on it, but they expect to get more in later in the week, so call before you go. With my employer, i receive a total of 3 weeks paid time off that i can use at my discretion but if I use up too much time before the end of the year, then I have to come in and work if I'm sick since this time doesn't roll over. In October/December, i actually worked while having a fever & being contagious because i didn't have enough time to take. It sucks, but at least I'm getting paid. more ›
