2 Arrested After Pointing Gun at Cabbie, Police Say

According to Lower Merion Police, a dog tracked down the defendants.

A man and a woman were arrested in Merion Station over the weekend after Lower Merion Police say they pointed a handgun at a cab driver during an argument. Laquan McCall, 22, faces six felony charges relating to the incident—including robbery, aggravated assault, and firearms charges—while his female companion, 20, faces charges that have not yet been posted.  On May 11 sometime before 9:34 p.m., Lower Merion police said that McCall and his co-defendant entered a taxi at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia and asked to be taken to Upper Darby. All parties agreed to take City Avenue, by way of Interstate 76, to the destination, but while the cab was on City Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, McCall and the other defendant began arguing with the driver …

Stripper With Knife Stops Traffic on City Avenue, Police Say

The stretch between Conshohocken State Road and Bala Avenue was shut down from about 3 p.m. to 6:20 p.m.

An apartment resident's violent threats and eccentric behavior Wednesday afternoon—including wielding a large knife for hours and stripping naked during talks with police—prompted a massive law-enforcement response that kept part of City Avenue closed through evening rush hour, Philadelphia police told Patch. The unidentified man was taken into custody about 6 p.m., having been stunned with a Taser gun just inside his front door, said Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan of the Philadelphia Police Department's Homeland Security Unit. It was unclear what charges he faced. The incident started about 2:10 p.m. at a building on the Philadelphia side just south of the Cynwyd Line railroad tracks. Sullivan told Patch the man, a resident of the apartment…

New City Avenue Zoning Rules Take Effect Monday

Lower Merion officials finished amending the new laws Wednesday night.

Builders of tall buildings can build them taller than ever on Bala Cynwyd's side of City Avenue, starting Monday, April 30. That's just one upshot of new zoning rules—years in the making—taking effect that day in an effort to invigorate commercial development in the busy corridor Lower Merion shares with Philadelphia. The township's Board of Commissioners made a few last-minute adjustments Wednesday night, partly at the behest of neighborhood residents. (Read Patch's account of the rezoning's original approval in December, and browse the township's database of explainer documents and maps.) "I hope the board will keep in mind that Bala Cynwyd is a neighborhood, that St. Asaph's Road, Conshohocken State Road and Belmont Avenue are the most …

As for me, I'd love Chipotle to move to the Bala Cynwyd side of the street. It's kind of a hassle to get in and out of there at certain times of day.   more ›

Fast Forward: City Avenue

Things seem to be moving pretty fast these days on City Avenue.

With all the talk of Lower Meron Township's rezoning efforts along its side of City Avenue, we thought a visual reference guide might be in order for the archives. This is a quick reference map covering most of Route 1, or "City Line," looking out the Township-side window.
