On Saturday, the Barnes Museum opens to the public at its new home on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.
After nearly 90 years in Merion Station, Albert Barnes' world-renowned art collection has made its controversial move to Philadelphia, and will be unveiled to the public in its new home on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Saturday. The collection—which includes works by Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, Soutine, Modigliani and Degas, along with some lesser known artists—is estimated to be worth $25 billion. Collector Dr. Albert Barnes created the Barnes Foundation in 1922 as an educational institution, with the philosophy of making art accessible to ordinary people. He requested that his collection never be moved or even rearranged. The Barnes, of course, has moved—and it will be unveiled to the public on Saturday, May 19 in a new, $150 …
Lower Merion School District's Board of Directors will finalize next year's budget in June.
The Lower Merion School District had $43 million in reserve funds last year—the fourth highest reserve in the state, which on June 30 of last year had $3.2 billion total reserve funds in school districts, according to an article in the Pennsylvania Independent. Districts with more in reserve funds are Pittsburgh ($148 million), Downingtown ($50 million) and Abington ($45 million). Gov. Tom Corbett's administration is encouraging districts with large reserve funds "to dip into those accounts to cover operating expenses in a year when state education funding is increasing, but not as much as districts would like," according to the Pennsylvania Independent. "About 70 percent of the state's 500 districts are tapping into their reserve funds in…
The ticket matched five of six balls in Tuesday's drawing, the Pennsylvania Lottery announced.
The Ardmore Rite Aid sold a ticket to Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing that earned a $250,000 jackpot, the Pennsylvania Lottery announced Wednesday. From the lottery's report: The winning ticket correctly matched all five white balls, 10-11-12-14-24, but not the yellow Mega Ball 06, for a prize of $250,000, less federal withholding. The store will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Lottery officials cannot confirm the identity of the winner until the prize is claimed and the ticket is validated. The lottery's announcement incorrectly places the store in Delaware County.

The owners hope to open in late May on Rittenhouse Place in Ardmore.
Barbacoa, a wood-fire rotisserie restaurant that specializes in Peruvian chicken, ribs and brisket, will open on Rittenhouse Place in Ardmore by the end of May. The restaurant, located at 64 Rittenhouse Place, is the second of what will hopefully be a growing number of Barbacoa restaurants in the area, owner Guy Buonadonna said. The first restaurant, which opened last year in Upper Darby, is so popular that some days, there's easily a two-hour wait. One reason behind that popularity is the uniqueness of Barbacoa's food, which centers around wood-fire concepts, rotisserie and barbecue ("barbacoa" in Spanish). The restaurant is known for its juicy Peruvian chicken. The secret? It's brined for up to a day and then put on a double-spin, self-…

“Backwards” is an indie drama that Haverford native Sarah Megan Thomas wrote, produced, and co-stars in.
Remember last summer when there were James Van Der Beek sightings in town? Those scenes, shot at the Haverford Train Station, the Shipley School and other local sites, form part of the backdrop for Haverford native Sarah Megan Thomas's film Backwards. The film, which Thomas wrote, produced, and co-starred in, centers on the life of a female rower (Thomas) who has just failed to make the Olympic team and becomes a girls' high school coach. Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek stars as Thomas's love interest, and the film also stars Margaret Colin of Gossip Girl, Wynn Everett, and Sideways supporting actress Alysia Reiner. Aside from the Lower Merion locales, the film also features the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Boathouse Row as …
The following information has been supplied by the Lower Merion Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.
Two teenagers who allegedly stole juice and sweatshirts from The Haverford School on Sunday night were identified on a security tape by a police officer who recognized them, Lower Merion police told news media on Monday afternoon. Sweatshirts, juice, water bottles and an Under Armour backpack were stolen from The Haverford School around 7 p.m. Sunday night, police said. Police said the school security guard spotted two teenagers in the school parking lot and tried to follow them, but eventually lost sight of them. A review of the security tape showed that the two teens entered the school through an open window, and took sweatshirts, juice, water bottles and an Under Armour backpack, according to police. A police officer who reviewed the …

The Friends' Central School basketball star announced his college decision after months of anticipation at a press conference on Tuesday.
Updated 5:57 p.m. It's official: Amile Jefferson will be attending Duke University in the fall, the McDonalds All-American player announced today at Friends' Central School in Wynnewood. When the 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward made the announcement and donned a Duke cap shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the bleachers, full of fellow students, erupted with cheers. Jefferson's decision is almost as last-minute as it gets. The heavily recruited basketball star's decision comes a day sooner than the NCAA's late signing period deadline, but Jefferson's decision—or lack thereof—has been making headlines for months. The decision—between North Carolina State, Duke, Kentucky, Ohio State and Villanova—took as long as it did because Jefferson was …

Fattah will represent Lower Merion and Narberth in Congress if he is reelected in November.
"I am not your congressman, but I hope to be," said Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-2) to members of the Ardmore Progressive Civic Association on Monday night. Fattah, a Democrat who represents Pennsylvania's second district in the U.S. House of Representatives, will soon be representing Lower Merion and Narberth, if he is reelected in November. A 2011 legislative reapportionment placed Lower Merion and Narberth within the second congressional district, and consequently Rep. James Gerlach (R-6) will no longer represent the area in Congress. "I'm very excited about representing Lower Merion and Narberth, and working closely with the civic associations here in Ardmore," Fattah told the civic association, which met Monday night in the basement of …
