Original Penn Wynne Alex's Lemonade to Stand Again Saturday

Now a national effort, Alex's Lemonade is back home at Penn Wynne Elementary.

You’ve likely heard of . A nonprofit started in 2005 and headquartered in Wynnewood, it is among the nation’s highest profile organizations fighting childhood cancers. It has raised more than $40 million to date and funded hundreds of research projects.

You probably even know that it grew out of the efforts of a 4-year-old Wynnewood girl, Alexandra Scott, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma before her first birthday. Alex passed away from her illness in 2004.

In 2000, the original Alex’s Lemonade Stand was operated by Alex herself, and she raised about $2,000—to return the generosity she received from others.

Two thousand bucks in the year 2000. For such a short life, Alex had a profound knack for bringing things together very nicely—ask anyone who knew her, or who knows her family.

On Saturday, the business is back in town, at Alex’s old school, Penn Wynne Elementary. It’s part of the 8th annual “Lemonade Days,” a nationwide, three-day fundraising campaign that started today and runs through Sunday. (Click here for a list of other locations, near and far.)

Members of Alex's local family, friends, and other supporters will be carrying on her annual tradition of setting up a lemonade stand in her Wynnewood neighborhood. The tradition now includes games and a butterfly release.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and concludes around 3 p.m.

Volvo is involved now, too, and the company will be raffling off a new ride. Organizers say last year's event drew thousands and raised more than $100,000 for childhood cancer research.

Alex’s foundation is on Facebook, too, of course, where it’s pretty easy to donate, or to “send a cup of lemonade.”

Check back with the Ardmore-Merion-Wynnewood Patch afterward, to catch some photos from the day.

And … one last note: With lemonade on the brain, you might be tempted to wear something yellow.

Throw on something blue or purple instead. Those were Alex’s favorite colors.
