Bryn Mawr Fire Co. to Host 10th Annual 9/11 Ceremony

The  started a ceremony 10 years ago that involved reading the names of firefighters and police officers who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

It’s evolved since then and now includes an hour-long ceremony with a choir, video presentation, guest speakers and candle lighting in front of the fire house, said Jeff Josephson, third assistant chief at the Bryn Mawr Fire Co. and organizer of the event.

“It’s an event that we feel very strongly about,” Josephson said, “so it doesn’t become just one of those things that happened in the past and everyone forgets about.”

The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the Bryn Mawr Fire Co.

He said members from eight area fire companies participate, and between 100 and 200 community members turn out each year. Though the ceremony used to be held during the day, they moved it to evenings because the anniversary of Sept. 11 often fell during the week when it was difficult for those who work to attend.

“It really started out with six of us standing around, and now we have a 10-foot by 15-foot video screen, video presentations, a choir… It’s a nice event.”

“We want to make sure people don’t forget,” Josephson added.

The  will hold a short 9/11 memorial ceremony Sunday, Sept. 11, at noon at its Greenfield Avenue station house in Ardmore.
