'Ace for a Cure' Coming to Merion Cricket Club

The eighth annual tennis tournament raises funds to combat juvenile diabetes.

Move over Tiger: the 2013 U.S. Open isn't the only great sporting event kicking off in Lower Merion Township on June 10.

While the Open will be getting underway at the Merion Golf Club, just a couple down the road the eighth Annual Ace for a Cure tennis tournament will be held at the Merion Cricket Club.

The tournament benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation—an organization that endeavors to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes.

Ace for a Cure was founded by tennis enthusiasts Jim and Timmo Vesci after the couple's daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

“As a family, we decided to invest our energy and our love for tennis to help those affected by diabetes and the tournament was created,” said Vesci.

“It’s a spectacular event that grows in popularity and revenues each year. This year, we are especially excited as we will be at two spectacular tennis clubs at the same time. Our plan is to grow the tournament and expand our reach each year moving forward.”

The tournament, which features a doubles format, is being held at Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia as well as Merion.

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. the day of the tournament, and play begins at 10 a.m. Ticket are $150 per player and all guests must wear white tennis attire.
