Musical Instruments Needed; Harriton Hosting Dance, Theater Benefit Events

A new after-school music program at Ardmore's Bethel Academy needs your long-unused horns and strings.

Do you have a French horn collecting dust somewhere? Perhaps a violin, flute or clarinet that hasn’t been plucked or tooted since the Clinton Administration?

Do you have a child in college who may have stowed away a trumpet in the basement, or attic, five years ago?

A new after-school music program, "Maestro the Lion,"  at Bethel Academy in Ardmore is reaching out for tax-deductible donations of instruments. The program is based on a partnership with the school district launched by LMSD staffer Jackye Smith five years ago for an after-school homework group.

Donations of instruments are requested by June 10, and can be given to any LMSD music teacher or brought to the Lower Merion High School main office.

The instrument list of most needed items: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, French horn, trombone, and tuba.

We're sure they would take guitars and saxophones, too. To date, we're told the results have not been great, so be a mini-hero for a day (and claim your new status with Uncle Sam).

Harriton Benfit Shows

Harriton High School is hosting two performance benefit events this week, Thursday and Saturday.

An A Cappella Extravaganza: A Benefit for Musicopia” is Thursday (June 2) at 6 p.m. in Harriton’s auditorium. The performance features a cappella groups from Harriton (the Harritones and Pitch Please), Conestoga High School and The Haverford School. Proceeds benefit Musicopia, a Malvern-based nonprofit supporting Philadelphia school and community music programs. Donation is $5 at the door. (For more information email danhcarp@gmail.com.)

On Saturday (June 4) Harriton’s Black Box Theater hosts “Highlight for a Cause,” a dance marathon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The cause is a good one, and you can donate without dancing for four hours (or even attending, for that matter). Send checks to:
