Aces Football: No Breaks For Lower Merion Junior

QB Anton Noverhends' season ended with an injury Thursday.

You would figure Lower Merion junior Anton Noverhends would get a little leeway. The quarterback already missed a chunk of this season recovering from a MCL sprain in his right knee, after a teammate rolled up on his leg during pre-season practice.

A transfer from Harriton, Noverhends had earned the starting quarterback job at Lower Merion, and was making his second start there against Conestoga last Thursday.

Then misfortune Part Deux happened.

Noverhends' season ended early in the second quarter last Thursday when he scrambled out of the pocket in the Aces’ 35-10 loss and was tackled on the Conestoga sideline. Noverhends quickly grabbed his lower left leg, and was taken off the field. Aces’ coach Jon Rothberg said Noverhends may have broken his left ankle and is probably finished for the season. Noverhends appeared after the game on crutches and in a soft cast.

“This hits us two ways,” said Lower Merion senior Max Golden, who had a nice two-way game. “We lose our starting quarterback and we lose our best receiver, [senior Desmond] Ellis, who now has to go back to playing quarterback again. It’s a real credit to Desmond, because quarterback isn’t his natural position.”

The Aces will travel to area rival Harriton this Friday. Lower Merion carries a 2-4 overall record and is 0-4 in the Central League.
