May Is Older Americans Month. This Year's Celebration Includes A Contest.

The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services has sponsored a contest to celebrate this year's Older Americans Month.

Since 1963, May has been designated as  “Older Americans’ Month.” While there were 17 million U.S. citizens over age 65 when the holiday was created, today that number has grown to about 40 million, and it is expected to grow to about 86 million by the year 2050.  Each year’s celebration of Older Americans Month revolves around a theme. The theme this year is “Unleash The Power of Age.”

The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services has sponsored a contest this year to celebrate the month, asking for nominations to highlight the most exceptional Older Americans serving our country. From March 18 to April 29th 2013, they accepted nominations from around the world. The criteria were that nominees be at least 60 years old and reside in a U.S. state or territory. Nominees are actively engaged and committed members of their communities. Their community involvement (through work or volunteerism) has a significant and positive impact on the community. Nominees are positive role models who can inspire other older adults to continue to be active, vital members of their communities.

While the nominations are now closed, the judges will narrow the candidates to ten (10) seniors. On May 20th the finalists will be announced, and the public may vote from among the finalists from May 20th to May 28th. The winners will be announced on May 31.
