Wynnewood Valley Sensory Garden for Blind Wins Horticultural Society Award

has been notified by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) that the has been chosen to receive the 2011 PHS Community Greening Award. More than 80 sites were nominated for theprestigious award.

An awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 6th at the PHS Headquarters in Philadelphia, the township said in a statement.

“Community in action is an apt description of the transformation that has taken place at ,” noted Commissioner Rick Churchill. “The collaboration among our Parks and Recreation Department, the Lower Merion Conservancy, the Ardmore Rotary and so many other groups and individual volunteers has been remarkable.”

A dedication ceremony to celebrate the Sensory Garden’s improvements took place in May 2011 at the park, located at 1505 Remington Road in Wynnewood.

“It serves as an outstanding example of what great things can be accomplished as civic-minded volunteers partner with their local government,” said Commissioner Scott Zelov, Parks and Recreation Committee Chair. 

The award notification letter was sent to the attention of Patty Thompson of the Lower Merion Conservancy.

“Patty’s leadership and dedication to this project has been immense, as has that of Doug Klepfer of the Ardmore Rotary,” added Lindsay Taylor, Director of Parks and Recreation. “These two organizations made revitalizing this gem in the Wynnewood Valley Park their mission, and this award recognizes the success of their labors.”
