Township Planner Honored for Open Space Initiatives

Lower Merion Assistant Director of Planning and building is honored for the Cynwyd Heritage Trail in Bala Cynwyd, and Linwood Park in Ardmore.

The following is a press release from Lower Merion Township.

The Pennsylvania Urban & Community Forestry Council, part of the nonprofit Pennsylvania Community Forests (PCF) organization, has chosen Lower Merion Township Assistant Director of Building & Planning Christopher Leswing to receive its Outstanding Volunteers Award for his collaborative work on two recent Township open space initiatives: the Cynwyd Heritage Trail in Bala Cynwyd, and Linwood Park in Ardmore.

“This is a really nice recognition for all of our volunteer efforts to improve public space in the community,” Leswing said. “Groups like Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail and the Friends of Linwood Park have become a big part of the quality of life in Lower Merion. Their enthusiasm and resolve as a growing group of volunteers is impressive.”

The award will be presented to Leswing at a ceremony and quarterly meeting of the Pennsylvania Urban & Community Forestry Council on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the DCNR Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey Office in Middletown, Pa.

PCF, geared toward improving community forests and green spaces, guides a statewide program that provides technical and financial assistance for communities and volunteer groups. The Pennsylvania Community Forests Council is affiliated with the DCNR Bureau of Forestry and Penn State University, serving as a clearinghouse of information for the community and dispensing funds and grants made available to the organization.

On a related note, Leswing was also appointed to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Council, an advisory body of open space professionals who advise the PHS Board of Directors on open space, environmental and civic greening issues.
