Old Gulph Road Ford Closed For Winter

A Lower Merion Township news release has the details of the road's closing.

Gates installed to block passage through the Old Gulph Road Ford have been closed for the winter by the Township's Public Works Department.

"While we realize that closing the gates may inconvenience travelers, blocking passage through the ford eliminates the many water rescues and other accidents that had been commonplace during winter months," said Don Cannon, Director of Public Works.

The gates are expected to re-open, depending on weather conditions, in March 2011.

"Our emergency team evaluates weather conditions and determines gate closures based on the safety of those traveling through the Township, which is our top priority," said Michael J. McGrath, Superintendent of Police.

Fords are deceptive streams of water. On days when the water levels in Mill Creek are low, they can be easily driven through. During rainstorms, flooding conditions make passage treacherous, and when temperatures turn colder, thin sheets of ice form, making for treacherous driving conditions.
