Narberth Wants Roundabout, Lower Merion Still on Fence

The intersection of East Wynnewood Road and North Wynnewood Avenue could soon be home to a modern roundabout.

While Narberth looks eager to install a modern roundabout at the problematic intersection of East Wynnewood Road and North Wynnewood Avenue, Lower Merion representatives say they want more time to weigh their options.

The Narberth Borough Council unanimously approved a motion on Monday night to, according to the Main Line Media News, "consider committee recommendation" to build a roundabout at the intersection in question, then voted to send a letter to the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners asking them to support the effort.

(A copy of the letter can be downloaded at the borough council's website)

It's support the township isn't ready to lend quite yet.

By phone on Tuesday, Lower Merion Board of Commissioners president Liz Rogan said the body recognizes the intersection is dangerous and is committed to implementing a solution, but emphasized that the Narberth Borough Council's decision won't change the process.

"This doesn't change anything on our end," she said.

Rogan said the roundabout is one of two options the township is considering to improve the intersection, the second being a traffic light, but added that while some action will be taken, no decision is imminent. It could be as late as September before the question of the roundabout is even considered in committee.

According to the Main Line Media News, the roundabout would entail a central island traffic would travel around counterclockwise, with circling cars getting the right of way. Narberth's council estimates the roundabout would cost $325,000 and maintains that it's an especially safe option.
