Sobriety Checkpoints Planned for Lower Merion Roads This Weekend

Six weeks after anticipated heavy rain (which never materialized) forced Lower Merion police to cancel road checks for drunken driving, the department is planning to try again.

Over the coming weekend, the Township announced Monday, police will conduct stationary checkpoints of drivers' sobriety while also canvassing in patrols for the same purpose.

A grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is funding the effort.

The department had planned to focus its sobriety-check efforts on Lancaster Avenue the weekend of June 18-19, with areas of particular emphasis in front of Lankenau Hospital and in Rosemont, but the rainy forecast scuttled the program.

It was not known whether the department will this weekend concentrate on those areas where it had planned to do so in June.

The National Weather Service's weekend forecast as of Tuesday afternoon predicted partly cloudy nights Friday through Sunday and sunny days, with no mention of a chance of rain.
