Police Studying Security Footage from Hymie’s Robbery

The popular deli was robbed at gunpoint on Saturday night.

Lower Merion police are examining surveillance footage as they continue to investigate .

“We’re looking at any video from any business that might have seen something,” Lower Merion police detective Sgt. John Stillwagon said.  “We have some leads, but nothing concrete.”

On Saturday around 9 p.m., three or four masked men entered the popular Montgomery Ave. deli and announced a robbery, according to police. The men, one wielding a handgun and another wielding a shotgun, according to witness reports, took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register.

The men also stole cell phones and wallets from among the 12 customers present before fleeing out the back of the restaurant, Stillwagon said. It appears that they fled after sighting a car they mistook for a police car, he added.

The value of the items stolen—cash from the register and personal items from customers—has not yet been calculated. While the amount of cash stolen from Hymie's directly is known, it’s to the benefit of the police to keep that number under wraps, Stillwagon said.

“It’s a very good investigative tool for us: the only people who know how much money was stolen is us and the bad guys,” Stillwagon said.

As police continue to investigate, they are examining security footage. The hope is to finish examining surveillance tapes on Wednesday, Stillwagon said.

“There is such an overwhelming amount of evidence and interviews to do,” Stillwagon said. “We’re going through this as systematically as possible.”
