Police Blotter: Would-be Thieves Grateful Borders is Still Open

The following information has been supplied by the Lower Merion Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.

Lower Merion police reported the following recent crimes and incidents in a media briefing Monday afternoon:

Retail Theft: Police responded to a report of a theft that occurred about 5 p.m. on Aug. 23 at the Old Navy in the Wynnewood Shopping Center. A man was observed stuffing a large plastic bag with merchandise and was asked if he needed help, to which he said he did not. When he exited the store, the sensor went off and he refused to stop, police said. A woman was then observed exiting Old Navy with a large green bag, which also caused the sensor to go off.

The two were followed by store employees, and the man and woman threw the two plastic bags into the back of a pickup truck and entered the Borders store at the other end of the shopping center, where they were lost. Police said the truck was determined to be a random vehicle after the two individuals realized they were being followed and were trying to get rid of the merchandise. The merchandise, valued at $662, was recovered from the back of the truck.
