Police Blotter: 'Strong-arm' Robbery at LMHS; Car Stolen in Haverford

The following information has been supplied by the Lower Merion Police Department. If arrests or charges are mentioned, they do not indicate guilt or a conviction.

On Monday afternoon,  reported to news media the following incidents from the past week:

Theft, robbery, harassment

In what police describe as a “theft by unlawful taking,” a student at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore was allegedly robbed of his bookbag on Oct. 7 at 8 a.m. by Richard Adger Jr., 18, of the 200 block of Simpson Road in Ardmore. A warrant was issued for Adger’s arrest, and he was apprehended later that day and charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property and harassment, police said.

Auto theft

A 2007 Kia Rio was reported stolen Oct. 6 at about 10:30 a.m. from the 300 block of W. Lancaster Avenue in the Haverford section of Lower Merion Township, police said. The owner said he had parked it overnight on the 5th at his apartment complex and discovered it gone the next morning after making inquiries to see if it had been towed. Auto theft is rare in the township these days, police said, due to modern security features on late-model cars. It was not reported if the vehicle was locked.

Theft

A woman eating lunch with a friend on Oct. 6, between 2:55 and 3:50 p.m. at in Wynnewood reported her handbag stolen, police said. The thief made quite a haul in one stroke: stolen was a black leather Balanciga handbag valued at $1,500, a Louis Vuitton wallet valued at $600 and a Pucci credit card holder valued at $250—in addition to $400 in cash, police said. Total value was $2,750. There are no suspects.

Attempted burglary

The owner of a home on the 100 block of Overbrook Parkway in Penn Wynne reported an intruder who likely entered the house through the garage shortly after midnight on Oct. 7, when she heard a noise while asleep that she did not get up to investigate, police said. The next morning, the homeowner discovered that the intruder evidently kicked in a set of French doors from the garage, knocking over a table. Police suspect that the intruder fled immediately after. Nothing was reported missing in the official incident report.

Retail theft

Security at the in Wynnewood apprehended a man on Oct. 4 suspected of trying to steal four packages of pork chops, hidden in his clothing, valued at $43. Police identified the man as Lonnie Brown, 64, of the 5400 block of Larchwood Avenue in Philadelphia, who police say has a history of retail theft. Bail was set at $7,500. Unable to post 10 percent of that total, Brown was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, police said.

Theft from vehicle

The owner of a car on the 200 block of E. Athens Avenue in Ardmore reported that the vehicle had been opened and its contents rifled through, sometime between Oct. 1 and 5, police said. No damage was done to the car, though an undetermined amount of change was missing. The incident was .

Underage drinking

Responding to a call on Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. about a possible alcohol overdose from St. Joseph’s University security, police and paramedics discovered a 20-year-old student at the Merion Gardens Apartments, at E. Wynnewood and City avenues in Merion, who was conscious but vomiting. The student was taken to Lankenau Hospital for evaluation and was issued a citation there.
