Police Blotter: DUI Accident Scene Snares a 2nd DUI

A drunk driver was caught at the intersection of City Avenue and Wynnewood Road, where police were on the scene of an accident caused by another drunk driver.

Police said they responded to a one-vehicle accident in Wynnewood at the intersection of City Avenue and Wynnewood Road at 1:57 a.m. on May 18, and found a blue Subaru Forester overturned on its side in the southbound lane. The driver, William Chinburg, 21, of the 500 block of Rockavon Road in Narberth, failed a field sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol content of .16, police said Chinburg charged with driving under the influence.

Soon after, at about 2:40 a.m.—at the same intersection—another vehicle, a gray Nissan Altima, was approaching the accident scene with a flat tire and making a lot of noise. Police said the driver failed a field sobriety test and had a blood-alcohol content of .18. Police charged the driver, Brittany Romano, 20, of the 200 block of Lippincott Avenue in Ardmore, with driving under the influence.

At a briefing Monday afternoon, Lower Merion Township police announced the following additional crimes and incidents in the Ardmore-Merion-Wynnewood area in the past week:

* A Garmin GPS was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked on the unit block of Chatham Road in Ardmore, overnight between May 16 and May 17.

* A laptop computer, jewelry and a camera were stolen between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. on May 18 from a residence on the 600 block of Sussex Road in Wynnewood. The homeowner came home to find a screen from a garage window on the ground and called police. The stolen property, taken from numerous rooms, was valued at about $1,000, police said.

* A bike was stolen between 4 and 5:50 p.m. onb May 19 from the front porch of a residence on the 600 block of Highland Avenue in Merion Station. The bike was a light gold, 53-inch men’s Jamis speed bike, worth about $1,500. The owner was in the process of bringing the bikes out of his home, went back inside and returned to his porch to find the bike missing.

* About $650 worth of perfume and underwear was stolen from the Victoria’s Secret in Suburban Square at 3:22 p.m. on May 20. Police said a woman entered the store with a red purse and a green suitcase, put the stolen goods in the purse and then transferred them to the suitcase. Police found a woman who matched the description given to them by store employees and identified her as Melanie Green, 34, of the unit block of N. Felton Street in Philadelphia, who was charged with retail theft. Police said there was another woman involved, but her name was not given.

* At Saxby’s Coffee on Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore, at 10:15 a.m. on May 21, an employee hung a handbag in the back, and went in to find a small amount of cash missing. Police said store security footage showed a black man, about 40 years old, with a blue T-shirt, long khaki pants and a short haircut going through the wallet. Police said he entered the coffee shop through an unlocked back door.

*An unlocked bike was stolen from the 100 block of Walnut Avenue in Ardmore between 10:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. May 22. The bicycle was described as a black specialized road bike.
