3 Arrested for Stealing 100 lbs. of Scrap Metal, Police Say

Three people are arrested after they allegedly tried to steal scrap metal from a Lower Merion Township facility.

Police arrested three people after they tried to steal sheet metal and guardrails from a Lower Merion Township maintenance facility near the intersection of Mary Waters Ford and Flat Rock Roads on Jan.1.

Police arrested Rafael Marrero, 26, Yashiva Marrero, 27, and Rosa Nunez, 27, all three of the 4200 block of North Eighth Street after witnesses saw them attempt to steal scarp metal from the township.

According to police, a man’s minivan broke down near the intersection of Flat Rock and Mary Waters Ford Road around 12:05 p.m. on Jan. 1.

The man coasted the van into the driveway of the township owned facility and called a friend for help.

While the man waited for his friend to arrive a black pickup containing both of the Marreros and Nunez pulled up to the facility, police said.

Nunez asked the man if he needed help, and, according to police, also asked if he knew anywhere nearby where they could sell scrap metal.

After the man in the minivan told the trio he didn’t need help, police said they opened the gate to the facility and entered.

When the man in the van’s friend arrived, the friend decided that the pair should call the police because the friend thought the scenario was suspicious.

When police arrived on the scene, they stopped the truck and discovered more than 100 pounds of scrap metal in the bed underneath a sheet, police said.

Police then arrested the three individuals and charged them with theft and related charges.
