On Thursday, Sept. 20, the Lower Merion varsity boys shut out Haverford High School in a Central League match. The Aces are currently ranked 10th in the state and are sitting on a record of 5-1-1.
The first goal was produced in the first 15 minutes of the game. After peppering the Fords with many shots in the first 10 minutes the goal finally came and was scored by Senior Brian Roberts on a placement shot, which was assisted by senior captain Matt Lindheim with a well headed pass. The second goal came with 10 minutes remaining in the first half by senior Greg Levy from a tremendous thru ball from senior captain Mark Abi-Khattar. The Aces shut down Haverford who were not able to produce much the entire game.
The second half displayed a very solid defensive performance from the Aces which stifled the Fords. There was little action on the Aces net in the second half and the game got chippy as the Fords picked up three yellow cards. The midfield played a strong game in passing and creating space and opportunities. The Aces kept their cool, preventing unnecessary fouls, and walked out with a clean sheet with no warnings or yellows cards.
Coach Severini stated, “This was a nice win for our team. We have eight new starters this year and the boys are responding very nicely. We played a solid game; scored when needed, and defensively shut down the other team.”
Senior Captain goalie Connor Yu had a solid game and picked up the shutout. Next up for the Aces are league rivals Upper Darby this Saturday at Arnold Stadium, LMHS.
