Oh Baby Its Hot Outside ...

Dressing for the weather: not an easy task in spring time.

Oh baby it’s hot outside …  But for the first time in more years than I would like to recall, we are having a true spring!

There have been hot days (like today) and there have been cold days (like this past Saturday), but best of all there have been spring days.  You know the kind that we (those of us born before 1990) had when we were kids—when the temps started out in the 50s and rose to the 70s or 80s by day’s end. When we could walk or play outside , see our flowers bloom and the green grass grow. I love transitional weather, spring and fall.

As much I love spring, it can pose some real wardrobe dilemmas. Lately, the question I get asked most often is, “How do I dress for this weather? I have clothes for hot or cold weather in my closet but nothing for these in-between days.”  Universally, my answer is that if you have items for hot and cold weather, you definitely have what you need in your closet for those gorgeous spring days.

The first lesson of transition weather dressing is that nothing is off limits—from white linen to lighter-weight cashmere or wool sweaters... anything goes!  I always tell people to think of the most limiting portion of your day as it relates to your wardrobe, when you are deciding what to wear that day. Then, dress around that limitation.

Here are a few things to improve your successful dressing on  days when weather is your limitation:

On days when it starts colder and gradually rises to a beautiful 79 degrees, combine your cold and your hot day clothing by laying. You'll find you will be prepared for anything.

On a sweltering hot day like today, when it is brutally hot at sunrise and unbearable at 4 p.m., grab the lightest piece of ‘appropriate’ clothing (depending on where you will be spending your day: work, school, garden or, with any luck, the beach) and dress around that piece.

So before you get dresses tomorrow (another sweltering day is in store for Thursday), think outside the box about what you have to do during the day, and select the item in your closet that will help you get it done in style, and with a little less sweat.

Stay cool!
