Map: Celebrate Earth Day in Penn Wynne

The Sunday event features activities for both children and adults: live animals, an electric car, information on sustainable practices, raffles, food and more.

This Sunday, Penn Wynne Civic Association will hold its inaugural Earth Day celebration at Wynnewood Valley Park, with a vast array of activities for both kids and adults.

The event runs from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 21 at Wynnewood Valley Park (1505 Remington Rd, Penn Wynne) and includes nature walks, live animals, information on composting and worm boxes, a freecycle event and more, according to a press release.

This first year focuses on sustainable practices, and includes a few art activities and performances, too.

Wynnewood author Kell Andrews will read from her young adult novel Deadwood, which is set in Wynnewood Valley Park and was published in November.

Plus, in addition to live music throughout the afternoon, Wolf Performing Arts Center will present a preview performance of "Cats" at 2 p.m.

Activities include:

  • A stream walk led by Riverbend Environmental Education Center
  • Tree identification walks led by volunteers from the Lower Merion Shade Tree Commission
  • Live native animals from Riverbend
  • Tours of the Lower Merion Sensory Garden
  • Children’s gardening activities led by Margie Levinthal, winner of a township “Go For the Green” award this year
  • A children’s bike clinic by Main Line Cycles
  • Collaborative children’s prayer flag painting led by David Stehman of Sweet Mabel Folk Art and Fine Crafts
  • Japanese calligraphy installation led by Chika Inoue from the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Delaware

In addition to the kids activities, Armen Chevrolet will display their Chevy Volt, Penn Wynne Green will host a freecycle, and you can enter a raffle to win goods and services from local businesses.

Information will be available on:

  • Choosing renewable energy for home electricity (by Energy Co-Op)
  • Household energy efficiency (Lowry EcoSolutions)
  • Rain barrels and composting (Lower Merion Environmental Advisory Council)
  • Landscaping with native plants (Lower Merion Conservancy)
  • Worm boxes to reduce household organic waste ("Nature" Jack Marine)
  • Community-supported local agriculture (Harvest Local Foods)

Plus, grab some grub from Boston Style Pizza/Mediteranean Catering and Firinji.
