About two dozen or more young area Catholics met at the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood late Wednesday afternoon, a small part of about 200 from the Philadelphia Archdiocese headed for France, Portugal and Spain to take part in a 12-day pilgrimage that will conclude at "World Youth Day" with Pope Benedict XVI in Madrid, from August 16 to 21.

Local participation was coordinated by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Office for Youth and Young Adults.

World Youth Day is a gathering of Catholic youth, meeting with the Pope, that happens every two or three years. More than 420,500 young Catholics registered for World Youth Day 2011—a record to date, the church says.
