Sam's Grill Shuts Its Doors

The Wynnewood restaurant, in business for 16 years, closed for the last time on Friday.

And just like that, a Wynnewood staple is no more: after 16 years in Lower Merion, Sam's Grill shut its doors for the last time on Friday night.

The 2,417-foot space, located in the Wynnewood Shopping Center, is listed as available on the Federal Realty website.

"Thank you," reads a sign on the restaurant's door, in bold lettering. The sign continues:

Thank you to all of our devoted customers, neighbors and friends for 16 wonderful years at Sam’s Grill. We will miss seeing you and your families and hope that you’ll join us at our Center City locations, Devil’s Alley and Smokin’ Betty’s.

Have a happy and healthy New Year!

While the restaurant previously had a red scrawling "Sam's Grill" sign above its storefront, the lettering has been gone for some time.

Did you eat at Sam's Grill? Are you sad to see it go? Tell us in the comments.

The Sam's Grill in Jenkintown closed awhile ago. It was only a matter of time for the Wynnewood one.

Amanda: we wish you could reach out to the former owners and ask what happened to cause the closure?

Hi G Kimmo—thanks for your comment. Absolutely—I'm working on getting more information about the closure, but wanted to get this initial article up as soon as I could.

We were long-time eat-in and take-out customers at Sam's, and have been dismayed at the way in which the physical plant was allowed to deteriorate over time. The food, wait-staff, and chefs were all top notch right up until the end, so we hope they will all have a place to go at Sue's other places. Given current shifts in demographics, this is no surprise from a marketing perspective. We will miss Sam's...their legacy as a suburban, family-friendly eating place is secure!!! Shame as the food was really good. Tougher market now in Wynnewood area with so many new places popping up. I remember 10-15 years ago this was virgin area for restaurants and now seems to be getting saturated.

I'm totally shocked and will be interested in reading the follow-up for why this happened. The food was great, the staff were fantastic, and they place was always full. I'm a local and Sam's was our 'go-to' place. It will be missed!

The place closed because the owner let it wither and die. -Someone in the Know

I suspect the lease was up for renewal and federal realty wanted some obscene amount to renew.

Totally agree. Sue and Len, Wynnewood

My husband and I frenquently ate at Sam's Grill. Best chicken soup and cottage fries ever! The wait staff was so friendly and accommodating and the food was always fresh and delicious. We will really miss the food and the staff. Thanks to everyone there for many years of service!

We unexpectedly found ourselves in Sam's the night before the lights went out for good. And by-the-by, were told the closure was due to a rent increase that just didn't fly with Sam's owner. We thought they had the best french fries within miles - not those dreadful batter fries that seem to be all the rage everywhere - and not a half bad BLT either. The place did have a decor that was in bad need of a make-over - the cowhide wallpaper in the back was withered and a rather strange choice. We always found the wait staff to be very friendly and prompt and will miss having it on our list of resonable and convenient choices. Hopefully something we can use will go in there soon - not another frozen yogurt joint please - and the staff will move onto better places.

Why she couldn't have done what Gillane's owner did and SOLD THE PLACE that we all loved to go to. Gillane's on Irish Row in Ardmore, is now owned by Mr. Barson of Hymie's fame and a Mr. Paul. Ate there on Saturday and it is great!

Darn, the best hamburger on the Main Line is gone. The place always looked busy to us when we were there. We're locals and ate there often. Too bad. It looked like a successful place, the food was always good, and the people were always pleasant. It was nice to be able to eat a good meal that wasn't franchise food. We'll miss it.

So sorry to hear that Sam's Grill has gone out of business. Great ribs, great burgers, great salads, and the absolute best bread puddings. Such a loss for Lower Merion as it was an unusual mix of BYOB with good food and casual style, as well as a great take-out place. Am missing it already.

I'm still missing Kip's. Best onion rings there ever were, or ever will be. I'm old enough to remember having Cherry Cokes at the Wynnewood Pharmacy fountain counter...and biking to get there.

I agree with several of the comments. The place was always busy. To the greedy landlord who jacked up the rent: I wouldn't be surprised to see this place sit vacant for quite awhile. Thanks for running a good tenant/restaurant OOB.

Sad to see Sam's go...I hope they find a new place on the main line to call home with a rent they agree with. Just learned via this article that they own Devil's Alley...we could use a Devil's Alley out here! I'm sure you can find a home in downtown Ardmore!

Have been a frequent and satisified customer of Sam's for the past 8 years. So sorry to see it close. Sadder still because I just received a gift of a Sam's Grill gift certificate (for a large amount). They sold it to my friend on November 27. Anyone know how I can reach the owner? Beth ~ Narberth

This is a bummer. One of the first places I dined at after moving to this region 12 years ago. Loved the bread pudding, pulled pork, turkey, salmon. and let's not forget the spinach salad with bacon dressing. And the cooks - the sweetest guys around. Not to mention some of he best waitresses (Jennifer, Genevieve). Damn.

I remember Kip's and the soda fountain at Wynnewood Pharmacy, good times! Kip's was my favorite, we used to eat there when I was a kid. The grill cook would always come out and say hello to me and we would chat.
