Lower Merion Girls Soccer Aims to 'Bring the Lumber' in 2010

A look at the 2010 Girls Varsity Soccer team at Lower Merion High School.

"Bring the lumber", that's the mantra of the 2010 Lower Merion girls varsity soccer team according to Coach Kevin Ries. Ries believes this year's team is primed for another trip to the district playoffs with hopes of a deep playoff run.

The 2010 Aces look ready to impress with a combination of speed and power, implementing a combination of big backs with some speed up front.  Focusing their efforts on hard work, this team should be quite enjoyable to watch.

Coach Ries, entering his eighth season as head coach, hopes to build off Lower Merion's previous years of success, even with the loss of last seasons senior midfield cornerstone, Caitlin Bonney.  The 2010 team will see the return nine starters, seven of which are seniors, solidifying their hope to use veteran leadership to their advantage.

That leadership and presence on the field can be most clearly noted in this seasons varsity captains.  Seniors Julia Siegal, Laura Peterson, and Julia Miller will all be entering the fourth year of varsity play at Lower Merion, asserting a tone of confidence to the underclassmen or younger players finding their stride.

The Aces roster also features a slew of players to watch, including both Patty Neckowicz and Julie Reiff, who have been noted for having a nose for the goal. Also watch for talented defensive players Laura Peterson and Julia Miller, who according to Coach Ries are are great one-on-one defenders.

Their schedule features twenty games, with key matches against league foes. "We hope to compete against Conestoga, Radnor and Haven this year," said Ries. "It will take 11 very talented soccer players to win the district playoffs, as well some luck."

The 2010 girls varsity soccer team looks poised to use their previous experiences to push them over the hump toward a shot at the district championship this year.
