The Rain Let Up for a Great Main Line Weekend

The storms relented for a few days, making way for a block party and street festival.

I’m glad we all survived the predicted “Rapture” of May 21, because it turned out to be a great weekend.  Saturday’s beautiful weather made it perfect for our street’s annual block party.  It was terrific to spend the day outside and re-connect with neighbors.  There are people on my block who I don’t see for months at a time even though they are literally within shouting distance.  The warmer temperatures help get people outside in general, but this party was a great opportunity for the whole street to get together at once.

I just love the concept of the block party.  It reminds me of that neighborhood feel I remember from when I was a kid.  I now live in a twin, on a tightly packed street, with little space between homes, so the neighborhood layout does a lot to foster a sense of togetherness.  Still, cable TV, social media and smart phones seem to separate us a bit more from our neighbors these days, making planned occasions and get-togethers even more important in helping us maintain our sense of community.

The rains held off on Sunday, too, making way for an even bigger party, the Narberth Spring Music Festival.  It seemed like half of Lower Merion showed up for this one.  Everyone was grateful for a break from the downpours, and a street festival was just the ticket.  Kudos go out to McShea’s and The Greeks for another great party.  How can you go wrong with a free event that offers live music and great street food?  They have them three times a year.  You can’t call yourself a Main Liner until you’ve been to one!
