U.S. Open Merchandise Has USGA Seeing Green

The 2013 U.S. Open logo was the emblem that sold a thousand hats...17 times over.

The 2013 U.S. Open was all about the green. And we're not talking about putting.

While the final sales figures for U.S. Open merchandise won't be in for a few weeks, according to USGA assistant communications director Dan Hubbard, business was brisk at Merion Golf Club last week. 

Very brisk.

"I can tell you the sales far exceeded our expectations," said Hubbard. "The Merion logo was very popular."

Hubbard said that the merchandise shop sold out of many items, including most T-shirts and all of its 17,000 hats.

"Traditionally, we have a sale [of all the remaining items] on Monday following the championship," Hubbard added. "This year, we didn't do that because the amount of merchandise left was [so meager.]"

The last time the USGA sold so many items that the post-tournament sale was cancelled? Try 1998.

Looks like the 2013 U.S. Open might not be Merion's last after all. Sorry, Rick Reilly.
