Santa Fe Burrito: Stop in For a Burrito, Delicious Guacamole and a Mexican Coke

This week food writer Clara Park reviews Santa Fe Burrito in Wynnewood.

On especially hot days like last week’s, my mind always turns to burritos, tacos and guacamole and chips. I headed to in the Wynnewood Shopping Center to get my fix.

Inside the eatery stands in stark contrast from the beige, commercial strip mall in which is resides. The walls are various shades of orange and there are Christmas lights hanging throughout the space. The menus are hand-scribbled in varying fluorescent hues. Shiny metal fixtures reflect assorted colorful works of art adorning the walls.

Famished, dehydrated and practically suffering from heat stroke, I ordered the guacamole and chips, a chicken mole burrito and a mango drink. At $4.99, the filled-to-the-brim deli container of fresh guacamole was a tremendous bargain. Most places give you a sauce cup of guac and then charge you for it.

Santa Fe Burrito’s guacamole is tasty, well seasoned and gives you a solid bang for your buck. The avocados they used were fresh, ripe and a gorgeous green color. I could taste lime and enjoyed the tomato, onion and cilantro on top. The chips were light, crisp and a perfect accompaniment to the guac.

The chicken mole burrito was decent. The grilled chunks of white breast meat were well cooked and tasty. The rice was flavorful and had a nice texture. The mole was fair but not quite the symphony of flavors for which I had hoped. (It tasted like chocolate sauce. I will say that the version here did have a nice smokiness to it.)

The mango drink was sadly “from concentrate,” so instead of the fruity goodness I was expecting, I imbibed a dull and somewhat sour beverage that vaguely tasted like mango. Santa Fe Burrito offers plenty of other beverages as well, so next time I’ll opt for a “Mexican Coke” (like , it has real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, and tastes sweeter as a result) or one of the equally sugary day-glo Jarritos sodas.

The service is wonderful. The staff is friendly, efficient and eager to help. The gentleman at the counter was patient with me as I read over their extensive menu. I loved the variety of items they had. My food came out fast and hot. The counter and kitchen areas are clean and well maintained.
