Seasonal lattes make me happy. During the fall and winter months, my coffee budget goes up exponentially, as a regular cup or iced coffee just won’t do—not when there are flavors like pumpkin spice available, in latte form. And luckily, the extra calories from the whole milk I prefer are much more forgiving during sweater weather.

It’s this love of fall-flavored lattes that has had me hunting over the past week and on a recent morning, I found myself at MilkBoy Coffee in Ardmore. I approached the counter, staring up at the menu trying to decide what to have. I was then informed that MilkBoy now offered table service and that I should have a seat.

I got myself situated at a small table and was given a menu to peruse. I asked about their latte flavors and was offered pumpkin, small or large. How big is large, I began to ask— ...never mind. I went with the large.

I logged onto MilkBoy’s free Wi-Fi and looked over the menu options, and bopped along in my head with the 80’s pop mix they had pumping through the speakers.

The first thing to catch my eye was the award winning Vegan Scrapple they offer. I’m no vegan—in any way, shape or form. I usually try to avoid such faux-meats: they bother me. But my curiosity and outright love of scrapple won over the decision. I just had to know what it tasted like. So I ordered two eggs up and a side of vegan scrapple.

Moments later my latte arrived. I believe the foamy image was a heart. I like hearts, so I may have been imagining things. As I drank my latte, the little heart on top just got lower and lower, remaining right on top of my coffee. The coffee was delicious and much better than the oversweetened fall-flavored lattes I usually enjoy.

My server arrived, eggs and scrapple in hand. It was only then that I realized my fatal flaw. I forget to order toast. So I did and it was on my table a moment later.

The eggs were cooked perfectly and had been seasoned with salt and pepper: not gooey or slimy, but cooked to dip. The multigrain toast was seeded and crunchy; the perfect partner to my eggs and a nice addition to my social media browsing and latte.

The vegan scrapple had the texture and flavor of polenta seasoned with a heavy hand of cracked pepper. I asked my server for syrup, as this is how I usually enjoy my scrapple. Alas, they had none to offer. It was probably for the best, allowing me to taste the breakfast “meat.” It was crumbly and didn’t have the same stringent form that traditional scrapple has, most likely from the lack of gelatinous fats, but it was sure was delicious.

MilkBoy has a great vibe and is much more inviting than many cafes and coffee shops can sometimes be. The coffee’s not too strong, they don’t give you funny looks while you try and decide what to order, and there’s no rush to have you leave, apparent in the comfy couches with cupholders and free Wi-Fi.

Pretty much anything on the menu is or can be made vegan friendly and with an entire lunch menu I have yet to try, I’ll be sure to go back soon.
