It's been a while—a decade, in fact—but Pottery Corner is back. The Polish pottery store, previously located on Rock Hill Road in Bala Cynwyd, has made a triumphant return to Lower Merion, taking up residence in the Wynnewood Shopping Center next to Sam's Grill.
The inventory may have changed a bit, but owner Marta Bolt assures that her store is filled with the same great quality Polish ceramics that it was 10 years ago.
Bolt, who is Polish herself, reopened her store in October at the Wynnewood Shopping Center. For the previous 10 years, she'd been focusing on her wholesale Polish pottery business in Bridgeport, she said. A Wynnewood resident, she decided to bring her business back to her town earlier this year.
What sets Polish stoneware apart? It's handmade, handpainted, lead free, safe up to 2000 degrees, durable, doesn’t chip or break easily, and microwave dishwasher and oven safe, Bolt said.
The intricate patterns and vibrant colors are based on traditional Polish stoneware, which was created by farmers in the 1700s, Bolt said.
The stoneware is easy to mix and match, and the dishes can be easily used every day, Bolt said. Certain items from her store have been featured at Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters in past years, she said.
The ceramics have two styles and price ranges: the signature collection is more detailed and intricate, signed by the artist, whereas the traditional collection is same quality but less decorated and not signed, Bolt said.
Prices for items like large bowls can average into the hundreds, but for the frugal holiday shopper, a variety of smaller items are available too, pictured in the gallery above:
- Small teapot, $32
- Salt and pepper shakers, $42
- Carved boxes, $20
- Christmas tree decoration, $69
Over the holiday shopping season, Bolt said, she will include sale items at the front of the store, and perhaps eventually sell other Polish items, such as candles, Polish chocolates and baskets.
