Last-Minute Shoppers Jam Ardmore's Suburban Square

Traffic was a nightmare, but horns were minimal.

Every parking spot was taken—over in the Anderson Avenue lot off Montgomery, the large lots between and among the Ardmore Farmers Market and Trader Joe's, and every single metered spot along Coulter Avenue and St. James Place, too.

On Friday afternoon at Suburban Square in Ardmore, business was booming, as shoppers did some last-minute Christmas and Hanukkah shopping, grabbed some lunch, a cup of coffee, and tried to score deals on newly marked-down merchandise.

For those who haven't been to the shopping center in some time, they got a good look at the new courtyard, too. The landscaping and new surface hardscaping are almost complete, as workers kept at it amid the crowds. (Alas, the fountain is still shrouded in a blue tarp, but at the other end of the courtyard, up a few handsome sets of new steps, the Menorah was set up nicely.)

Business among Ardmore's Lancaster Avenue and other downtown streets has been very solid this year, merchants said this week.

"I am impressed," said Harry Althouse, owner of  on Lancaster. "This has been one of the best [Christmas seasons] I've seen."
