It happened fairly quietly—there's not even a note on the door of its vacant Suburban Square storefront—but of Ardmore closed on Saturday, merging with its St. Davids location. Spa Solas, which sublet Jay Michael's second floor, is moving to Bala Cynwyd, according to owner Meg King.
"It's really sad—from an outsider's perspective, it seems to me that with the rent and the fees for [shared maintenance] being so high in Suburban Square, smaller boutiques stores, non-chain stores, can't afford to stay here," King said.
On Monday, King was working to clear out the remainder of her belongings from the spa's former home: chairs, a couch, beauty products. The first floor, where Jay Michael Salon was located, had already been completely cleared, with only the salon's stylist booths and chairs remaining.
Spa Solas will be merging with Halcyon Day Salon and Spa, located at Saks Fifth Avenue at 2 Bala Plaza in Bala Cynwyd (610-667-9166). Spa Solas will continue to offer all of the services it did at its Ardmore location, King said.
"We're really excited to have them come on," said Halcyon general manager Lou Decola, who was also on hand Monday to aid in the move.
Jay Michael Salon is now down to two locations: 595 East Lancaster Avenue, St. Davids (610-964-0800), and 1600 Arch Street, Philadelphia (267-514-8000). A representative of the salon could not be reached for comment.
Jay Michael's departure makes the number of current vacancies in Suburban Square an even 10, according to a Suburban Square leasing map available on the Kimco Realty website. The map, last updated on Monday, lists nine vacancies; the Jay Michael's vacancy is not reflected on the map.
Representatives of Kimco Realty were not immediately available for comment.
