Get Fit In 2012: Local Gym Membership Deals

Many gyms offer discounted or waived membership fees during the month of January.

If you need some extra motivation to get started on your fitness-related goals for 2012, you're in luck. Several gyms in Ardmore are offering discounted (or waived) membership fees for the month of January.

So get going—most gyms offer free tours as well, with some offering free seven-day trials or 30-day money back guarantees, too.

Planet Fitness is a 24/7 fitness facility offering access to treadmills, elliptical machines, weights and free weights.

Normally, a regular membership costs $59.99, then $10 a month after that—but opt in by Jan. 11, and you can pay just $10 (and $10 a month after that).

Or for an extended membership plan—under which you can bring in a guest for free each time you come, use the tanning beds and massage chairs, and go to another Planet Fitness location up to 10 times a month—the sign-up cost is usually $99, and $19 a month after that. Until Jan. 11, you can pay $8.66 for the sign-up fee and then $19.99 a month, a Planet Fitness employee said.

Main Line Y offers pretty much everything you could want in a fitness center: aerobic machines, weight machines, free weights, a pool, a track, classes and more.

Normally, the Y's membership fee is $99 and $65 a month after that. The sign-up fee is halved for January, so new members will pay $49.50 at sign up (along with the $65 a month fee).

Through at least the end of January, you can pay $99 up front with no membership fees for four months of gym access. Normally, the prices is $30 a month, an employee said.

Snap Fitness is another 24/7 gym facility, though staffed hours end at 8 p.m. most evenings. The gym offers aerobic and weight equipment along with a free fitness assessment.

Normally, Snap Fitness has a $49 enrollment fee, with a monthly gym fee of $39.95. If you sign up for a new membership during January, pay only $12 for the month (fees for the access card and enrollment are waived), and the normal monthly fee of $39.95 a month after January.

Philadelphia Sports Club, with six locations in the Philadelphia area, offers gym equipment as well as a number of group fitness classes, like Boot Camp, Body Conditioning, spinning and yoga classes.

Normally, Philadelphia Sports Club's joining fee is $149, but if you sign up in the month of January, that fee is waived and you will pay just the $39 processing fee during the month of January, and the normal $59 per month fee after that ($69 if you want access to the other Philadelphia Sports Clubs across the region).

Getting Started

If you're new to the whole fitness thing, set an easy goal for yourself—maybe start with 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week, and build up your endurance from there. Half the battle is just getting off the couch.
