In Waning Days, Borders Business is Gangbusters

Borders in Wynnewood has been jammed this week, with titles 20, 30 and 40 percent off.

The upper shelves on the main floor of the Borders in Wynnewood are already empty. They are the ones only reachable by store employees on ladders, but some of the regular inventory is starting to thin out pretty quickly, too.

Subscription cards litter the carpet in the magazine section, where browsers have been briskly scanning for days. Most periodicals are 40 percent off. 

Ringing up a customer Thursday afternoon, a Borders clerk said he and his felllow workers were anticipating a crush of customers this weekend, coming in to get an armful of books, CDs, DVDs, knick-knacks, greeting cards, and generally clearing out their Borders Rewards Club points.

The , four days after news broke that the national chain, with 399 remaining stores after declaring bankruptcy over the winter, will be lost in Wynnewood; nationally, the pink slips will number about 11,000.

Borders Rewards Plus customers will continue to get discounts through August 5. All acculmulated "Borders Bucks" will be honored until they expire, on July 31.
