Ardmore's 'Nearly New' Is Nearly Gone

Nearly New Consignment Shop, a Penn Medicine thrift store, will close for good on Friday after 51 years in Ardmore.

, the E Athens Ave store that just recently celebrated its 50th year in Ardmore, will close its doors for the last time on Friday, June 29. Employees of the thrift store, which benefits Penn Medicine, were told last month that the shop would be sold.

"The building will be up for sale ... I think it's worth more to [Penn Medicine] to sell it," an employee, who declined to be named, told Patch on Tuesday.

Nearly New, which sells gently used clothing, home furnishings and books,  usually closes around this time for the summer and picks back up in fall.

But the news that this time the shop would be closing for good came as a shock to the store's employees, as well as its customers.

"Our customers are really upset," an employee said. "A lot of them are seniors, and many can't afford [much else]. ... They've been our customers for years."

The two-floor store is down to two racks of women's clothing, several pairs of shoes, and a half-filled downstairs of collectibles, odds and ends, all of which are 75 percent off. The remaining furniture is discounted 50 percent. 

The store will also be selling its fixtures, including desk chairs and shelving, according to employees.

Newly New, located at 26 E Athens Ave. in Ardmore, is open 9:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. through Friday.

While Nearly New is Penn Medicine's only thrift store, Lower Merion has several  secondhand shops, including some run by other area hospitals: Jefferson Hospital's (closing for the summer at the end of the week), 's Hamper Shop in Narberth, and Bryn Mawr Hospital's thrift shop on Bryn Mawr Ave. Ardmore is also home to other consignment shops, such as the and .
