When we read medieval Jewish writers, we often do so without looking at the cultural contexts in which they worked. This is especially true for Jews living in the Islamic sphere. In these two sessions (program continues on Monday, December 12), David Zvi Kalman, a graduate student in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, will take a look at some of the peculiar features of medieval Jewish scholarship during the first few centuries of its encounter with Islam.
