Continuing Education for Health Care Professionals at Harcum College

Harcum College will offer two cutting-edge workshops this fall on Saturday, October 12, to help dental , physical therapy, and occupational therapy professionals obtain their required professional development hours.  Each program taps into an emerging health care trend—treating dental patients with autism and ethical issues for therapists. Each confers two CEUs upon completion and runs from 9:30 to 11:30 am. The sessions will be held at the Academic Center on the Bryn Mawr campus.

“Positive Treatment Strategies to Support Dental Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder” for dental professionals will offer positive strategies for working with patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is estimated to affect one in 88 children in the United States. The presenter is Brenda Eaton, M.Ed., BCBA, and Board Certified Behavior Analyst at Chester County Intermediate Unit. Eaton will document the incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorders, provide diagnostic criteria information, discuss epidemiology as well as levels within the Autism Spectrum, and will offer strategies and interventions that can be used during treatment.

“Ethical Issues in Physical & Occupational Therapy” will document cases and controversies that occupational therapists and physical therapy assistants routinely encounter related to ethical issues. For example, continuing to provide expensive therapy to patients who don’t comply with their rehabilitation or how insurance companies dictate a patient’s rehabilitation course when this is the therapist’s expertise. The session includes a forum for discussion of common ethical challenges faced in daily practice.
