By and for true lovers of food, "Foodie Files" chronicles the best (and worst) of the dining options in Ardmore, Merion and WynnewoodLooking for a good restaurant this weekend? Ardmore-Merion-Wynnewood Patch brought you the details of Khajuraho India Thursday. While prices may have gone up a bit, the lunch buffet remains a great bargain. Here are some other area restaurants that Patch reviewed this week in other neighborhoods: Kelly’s Taproom and Restaurant: 1107 East Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr A true hybrid bar and restaurant, this local favorite offers plenty of pub fare in addition to soups, …
Moms know how tough it can be to eat out with little ones. Patch wants to help you know before you walk in the door if Khajuraho India is a good place to eat with your children. Restaurant: Khajuraho India Is there a kids’ menu? No but the kids may enjoy the freshly baked breads, the vegetable pakoras or samosas and the chicken tikka masala. Are there healthy options on the kids’ meal? The tandoori chicken, the breads and the vegetable curries are fairly healthy. How does the restaurant deal with food allergies? Alert your server and they will be as accommodating as they can be. Is the …
Looking for a family friendly restaurant? This week, Patch reviewed Fellini Café Trattoria in Ardmore and chatted with its chef. Spaghetti pomodoro, mixed salads and a vegetarian panini are just some of the heart healthy offerings at this Italian restaurant. On a nice day the outside seating area is a treat. Click here for the full review. For the weekend, below are more reviews of area restaurants. Find out which have kids’ menus and which are paying the most attention to food allergies. Pizzi’s Pizza; 1025 West Lancaster Ava., Bryn Mawr Stop in for a slice, some Greek specialties or …
On a rainy Tuesday, I went in to Fellini Cafe Trattoria in Ardmore to speak with Giuseppe Dalto. I was greeted by a larger-than-life character who talked a mile a minute, gesticulated wildly and could not have been friendlier. Dalto is an industry vet to say the least—he grew up in a restaurant family in Italy and has been around the world three times. Find out more below. Name: Giuseppe Dalto Age: 40 Years in the Industry: “All my life.” Hometown: Salerno, Italy Current home: Ardmore, Pa. What brought you to Ardmore? “I had worked on cruise ships for seven years and had been around the …
Depending on how you fared in the genetic lottery, you may or may not have a stance on healthy diet and exercise. I've always been an active person, playing sports in high school and college. Now many years out of school, I still hit the gym, go on a run or go to yoga as often as I can to maintain my weight. Still, my yoga girls and me make it a point to grab a burger and beer after class whenever all of our schedules allow it. A weekly ritual of yoga followed by burgers and brew have generated plenty of laughs from our friends and significant others, which is understandable. Why spend an …
After Firinji’s kumpirs and smoothies made their first appearance at November’s First Friday Main Line, many of us were anxious for the arrival of Ardmore’s newest restaurant. Firinji officially opened its doors on Jan. 7, without too much of a fuss, owner Budo Bunul said. “We are thinking about having the ‘grand opening’ celebration a little later on,” he said. He’d prefer for the staff to get a little more training under their respective belts and perfect the food before anything big happens. As is, though, the food is good: it’s interesting and fresh—as is the sense of community Bunul …
If you’ve driven past the Ardmore West Shopping Plaza in the past few months, it’s likely you’ve at least glanced at the orange-lettered “Hummus Restaurant” sign hanging above Route 30/Lancaster Ave. If you’ve been aching to try the restaurant, like I have, or are intrigued at least, you’re in luck. I visited Hummus Restaurant with a few friends this week to check it out, and here’s the verdict: the menu is fairly large with a number of healthy options—making it a great spot to grab a bite during your lunch hour if you like Middle Eastern cuisine. Hummus Restaurant offers a variety of Middle …
Judging by the lunch hour lines, it looks like I'm not the only one excited about Suburban Square's newest restaurant, sweetgreen. Sweetgreen, which opened on Dec. 15, bills itself as a "healthy alternative to fast food"—and delivers on that promise. Not only are its menu items healthy, they're also affordable, eco-friendly and delicious. Some friends and I stopped into sweetgreen a few weeks ago to grab lunch. We sat down at some of the few seats available—a bar style seating area that faces Suburban Square—to peruse the menu. Sweetgreen's menu comprises nine different salads (eight regular…
The holiday season is quickly approaching, which means one thing: 'tis the season to drink coffee! Alright, alright— so there's more to the holidays that our favorite caffeinated drinks, but the return of seasonal favorites at local coffee shops does help usher in the holiday spirit... and keep us energized as we search for the perfect gifts. Patch's resident foodie conducted an ultra-scientific study (read: maybe not-so-scientific study) to find the best holiday drink options at Starbucks, Saxbys and MilkBoy. Here are the results. All caffeine and calorie information, unless otherwise noted…
First Friday Main Line provided attendees with a chance to meet the faces and food of Ardmore's newest restaurant, Firinji. During the First Friday festivities, Firinji handed out samples of a few of its menu items at Ardmore Initiative. Firinji, which means "baker" in Turkish, will feature internationally-inspired cuisine with Turkish roots. The menu focuses around a base of flatbread, kumpir (baked potatoes) and coffee, to which assorted toppings are added to create a variety of distinct dishes. The featured food available for sampling at Ardmore Initiative on Friday night consisted of …
Smack in the middle of Suburban Square, Plate Restaurant & Bar promises — and delivers — great casual fine dining. The relaxed atmosphere is enjoyable and the service is adequate, but the focus at Plate is — as the name suggests — squarely on the food, which includes many traditional recipes mixed with new or interesting ingredients. Plate is a popular destination for shoppers and a convenient spot to catch a bite after an afternoon of browsing Suburban Square. The restaurant is relaxed, but chic, with a dimly lit interior, modern décor and significant outdoor seating availability. When we …
From its comfort food-inspired menu to the mix-matched decor, Sam's Grill in the Wynnewood Shopping Center offers locals a casual and inviting dining experience. Sam's large, varied menu, friendly service and reasonable pricing make it a good option for local diners—but I wouldn't make a special trip just to visit. A good way to describe Sam's is that it's the kind of restaurant that acquires "regulars." The friendly, relaxed atmosphere is aided by its wait staff and the homey décor—which includes peach walls, comfy grey booths and an accent wall covered in cow print. A countertop separates …
Located on Lancaster Ave. in Ardmore, the charmingly styled A la Maison Bistro offers authentic French food and a pleasant dining experience—for a significant chunk of change. Overall, the restaurant atmosphere is enjoyable and the food agreeable, but there were aspects of the dining experience that left me wondering if A la Maison is worth the price for most diners. Literally translated, "a la maison" means "at home," and true to its name, A la Maison's dishes call to mind what good French home cooking must taste like. A la Maison's menu is limited but varied, featuring a selection of …
Situated on the far corner of the busy retail center, Wynnewood Shopping Plaza, Tiffin Indian Cuisine's large bay windows, typically reserved for retail store displays, invite you to step inside and sample a diverse northern Indian menu. Captivating and often confusing, Indian cuisine is a hearty and flavor-centered myriad of ingredients, each delicately balanced to achieve one-of-a-kind flavors unlike any other cuisine in the world. It has been the three-year long dream of owner Munish Narula to expand the reach of his restaurants and change the perspective of those who may have been timid…
