ElderNet of Lower Merion and Narberth, in conjunction with the Lower Merion Police Department, provide an invaluable service for seniors in Lower Merion and Narberth who either live alone or face issues making it difficult to open a door during an emergency.

The program permits access by police, fire or emergency medical service (EMS) personnel without resorting to breaking down the door of the residence.

A key to the residence is stored in a secure metal lock box at a location near the entrance, but not immediately visible to strangers. The location of the box and the access code to the lock-box are only available to police, fire or EMS personnel. It is used only during an emergency, and only if the responders cannot make entry into the home without using force.

The lock is installed by a police officer in full uniform. Furthermore, whenever the Lock for Life box is accessed, a representative from the Lower Merion Police Department will contact the resident and change the combination as an added measure of security.
