Wynnewood Genuardi's Closes July 5, Reopens as Giant July 15
Giant Food Stores begins its conversion of 15 Genuardi's stores on June 29.
The Genuardi's supermarket in Wynnewood will close for the last time on July 5, and reopen July 15 as a Giant.
Giant Food Stores announced Thursday, June 21 that it will begin the conversion of 15 former Genuardi’s Family Markets in the greater Philadelphia area on June 29 to Giant Food Stores.
During the conversion process, five stores at a time will temporarily close for about a week. The three-phase staggered approach is expected to be completed on July 22. The Wynnewood store, located in the Wynnewood Shopping Center, will close July 5 at 6 p.m. and re-open July 15th at 8 a.m. as a Giant.
The converted stores will receive updated refrigeration systems, improved lighting and new signage, according to Giant. All 15 stores will also be cleaned and painted.
The Federal Trade Commission approved Giant's acquisition of 15 Genuardi's stores, including the one in Wynnewood, on June 15.
According to the supermarket chain, Giant will hire approximately 900 part-time associates in addition to the 1,700 former Genuardi's employees being retained.
Many of the remaining items in the Wynnewood store are deeply discounted, as Genuardi's sells off its remaining inventory.

A question to people who have experience with both chains: what is your opinion of Acme vs Giant? We find the Acme in Narberth charming but too small, but are really enjoying the new one in Bryn Mawr.

I haven't been to the Acme in Bryn Mawr yet, but I do generally like Giant better than Acme, based on the completely unscientific opinion that Giant is cheaper than Acme (with the store card). I have no idea if that's actually true, though—can anybody speak to that from their experience?

Please read "Food Trade News" June 2012 issue. Acme Markets owner needs to divest the very troubled Acme division, which is operating in the red. Most stores will close or be sold at "fire sale prices".

Giant fired the Kosher supervisor. Be very careful what you buy at foreign-owned Giant. Not to be trusted!!!

On what basis are they not to be trusted? Are the Dutch known for pushing counterfeit Kosher items? Can't even use your real name "Rick Herring" President of Giant Foods. Are you perhaps the fired Kosher supervisor?

I am the former Kosher manager, who will be opening a Kosher market soon in the area, with thousands of Kosher items, not avalable outside NY area. Than you for your loving feelings towards myself. May God bless all of my Genuardi family.

Until I open a Kosher Market in Lower Merion, all my friend should patronize Acme Narberth Kosher

Just got back from Genuardi's. All merchandise now 75% off, what is left. The workers are very happy that safeway is finally getting out and are hoping that giant will treat them and shoppers somewhat better.

Thanks for the sale info, Mrs. Schwartz. And, for those of you who are bargain hunting, the St. David's store is open for one more week.

The merchandise is only 30% off at Radnor; maybe it will be bigger closer to closing day.
