Survey: Pa. Dems More Unified on Outcome of Monday's Debate

A Patch flash survey of political activists in Pennsylvania shows differing takes on the impact of the final presidential debate

Pennsylvania Democrats sound a bit more confident than Republicans that Monday night's foreign policy debate will help win votes for their candidate in the Keystone State, according to brief overnight surveys by Patch.

When asked if their candidate's debate performance will help him in Pennsylvania:

  • 19 of 22 Democrats who responded said yes, while three were neutral
  • 17 of 23 Republicans agreed that it will, while one disagreed, three were neutral and two had no opinion

When asked who won:

  • 15 Republicans said Gov. Mitt Romney won, while one said Obama, five were neutral and two had no opinion
  • 21 Democrats said Obama won while one was neutral

When asked who would be the consensus winner, as declared by national media:

  • 13 Republicans said Obama while two said Romney, six were neutral and two had no opinion
  • All 22 Democrats said Obama

The catchy phrases that stuck with debate watchers varied:

  • Republicans said Romney's reference to Obama's "apology tour" was a memorable moment for conservatives.
  • Democrats singled out Obama's "horses and bayonets" remark in responding to Romney on the strength of the modern U.S. military.

In their survey comments, Pennsylvania Republicans repeatedly noted what they called Romney's presidential bearing:

  • "President Obama acted like he needed a big victory tonight. Romney behaved like a President."
  • "During the debates both Obama and Biden have come across as angry and arrogant."
  • "Overall good debate.  Mitt looked as if he was the president whereas Obama looked angry and rather unprofessional at times."
  • "Romney continued to look more presidential. His demeanor was superior to the President's."
  • "I think the debates helped Governor Romney this year in much the same way they helped Reagan in 1980 and Kennedy in 1960."
  • "People will think of Romney as presidential where Obama came across as petty."

Democrats, in their comments, criticized Romney for being inconsistent and praised Obama's performance:

  • "Romney is all over the place and spineless; he just says anything"
  • "I have never seen a candidate be as dishonest and inconsistent as Mitt Romney."
  • "I think President Obama made the case tonight. I think there will be some that know our economy is tied to world events, and that the President, despite setbacks, has had a steady hand, and hasn't pushed us off into anything, and that will be important to continue our recovery in global uncertainty the next four years."
  • "If 60% of undecided voters are women, I think they would be more attracted to Obama's foreign policy (less bellicose) and emphasis on need to concentrate on education and infrastructure at home."

One Democrat was "pleased at the bi-partisan tone of Mr. Romney on those immediate foreign policy "problems' such as Syria, Egypt. Some on the right may see it as weakness on his part but I see it as adult behavior and statesmanship."

Patch's survey takers are local elected officials, candidates and activists who volunteered to take part in this non-scientific project.

Check out what surveys said following the second presidential debate.

The last 4 years have shown Obama has been in over his head for 4 years. If you want a stronger economy with lower unemployment with more jobs, VOTE ROMNEY/ RYAN.

Keith without the President, our nation would have been a whole lot worse off. The republicans want the quick and easy fix but there is no magic wand for the mess they made. We all wish the growth had been faster, and it could have been except for Republican obstructionists. But we see steady progress and that must continue. We can't go backward like the Romney Ryan camp would like. We can't let the Republicans continue to seek war and send our young men and women to be maimed or killed . We can't let the Republicans surpress women's rights to make choices about their bodies. If you have any brains or lacking that any sense of who is really in your best interest, VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN !

$900 billion out of $1.1 trillion would be like 85%+ of deficit. Obama is responsible for vast majority of deficit.

Belly up to the bar America, your frosty mug of kool-aid awaits. To think that the "one party" republicrats have answers that differ from each another, on anything but some irrelevant details, is dangerous. Not once have the republicrats mentioned the diseases that afflict us today. All that is discussed are symptoms. This obfuscation, accepted by "the majority", has almost reached the tipping point. Big government is precisly why the founders warned us so strongly and often, about the dangerous descent into mob rule. This mob rule, or democracy, has been the painful, bloody, and most frequent precursor to oligarchy throughout history, and remains so today. The word democracy may not be found, not even once, in The Constitution or any State Constitution for good reason. We "were" a Republic, our rule of law "was" The Constitution. All we need to do today to find blatant disregard for our Constitution is to look out the window, yet "the majority" applauds our fall from greatness, ignorant in their appreciation for the principals and the sholders we stand upon. I am proud to say I am not among them. Our Founders had a crystal ball. How could they predict, 235 years ago, our exact fate today?
I pray it is not too late to wrestle back The Constitution from the federal authority who has defecated upon it for over 100 years. When the people awake from their kool-aid slumber, the process may begin.

Anthony Wayne raises the Constitution. How amusing.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jun/17/curl-obama-a-domestic-enemy-of-the-us-constitution/?page=all

Obama’s Justice Department has even more flagrantly flouted the laws of the land. Out of the blue, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, reinterpreted America’s gambling laws (and dumped the decision on Christmas Eve so as to avoid scrutiny). More recently, Mr. Holder has decided to thwart congressional oversight by refusing to release documents on the disastrous “Fast and Furious” gun-running scheme, and he is actively fighting Florida for trying to expunge dead people from its voter rolls.
Now comes Mr. Obama’s decision to stop enforcing America’s immigration laws. The new policy states that illegal immigrants who were younger than 16 when they entered the country are eligible for a two-year exemption from deportation. Of course, the “deferred action process,” as Homeland Security Secretary Janet A. Napolitano called it, will apply to illegals up to age 30. (Think when they legally get their driver’s licenses they will also be handed a voter registration card?)

“What’s ironic,” columnist Charles Krauthammer noted, “is for eight years, the Democrats have been screaming about the imperial presidency with the Bush administration — the nonsense about the unitary executive. This is out-and-out lawlessness.”

Here's a taste - is 2010 higher than 2009???? Who built that?? 60% jump in welfare spending. Bob Casey voted yes and Obama signed it.

• 2009 spending: $1.89 trillion
o $644 billion – Social Security
o $360 billion – Unemployment/Welfare/Other mandatory spending
o $408 billion – Medicare
o $224 billion – Medicaid
o $260 billion – Interest on National Debt

• 2010 spending: $2.173 trillion (+14.9%)
o $695 billion (+4.9%) – Social Security
o $571 billion (+58.6%) – Unemployment/Welfare/Other mandatory spending
o $453 billion (+6.6%) – Medicare
o $290 billion (+12.0%) – Medicaid
o $164 billion (+18.0%) – Interest on National Debt

There are two proposals floating around Congress, one authored by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and another by Utah Republican Sens. Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee. While the two bills are slightly different, they would:

Require 3/5 (House version) or 2/3 (Senate version) majority votes in Congress for spending to exceed revenue in a given year

Llimit total spending to 18 percent of GDP, unless 2/3 majorities vote otherwise

Require a 3/5 vote to increase the debt limit

Bar courts from raising taxes to satisfy the above provisions (only included in Senate version)

Allow requirements to be waived during a declared war

74 percent of Americans supporting a Balanced Budget Amendment. Democrats choose not even to discuss it. Neither of the two initial proposals address loopholes.

Democrats won't let it get to that point.

Arthur Post

"Never passed a budget" for one reason only - Republicans filibustered every one, not allowing them to ebven be discussed, let alone voted on in a straight up and down vote. Filibuster is never mentioned in the constitution, and was made up by congress years ago to protect the minority party from being ignored - not to grind government to a halt, which has been the Republicans' objective over the last 3.5 years.
And the facts are in respect to our national deficit, that the Bush tax cuts and war spending are responsible for 75% of the deficit we have today, and the Bush recession for another 20%, look it up.

Tax cuts cannot create deficits. Spending creates deficits.

But since you brought up the tax cuts, Casey and the Democrats voted to extend them - you know the ones you and they attack - in 2010 and add a whole bunch more....they are the Obama Tax cuts now. So according to your faulty math, Obama's tax cuts are why we have the deficits......we can just ignore the $1 trillion in welfare spending for now.

Nice try to distort the facts with fake talking points.

Obama signed sequestration into law, and outright lied during the debate... It had Axlerod doing backflips in the spin room afterwards... As for Romney and FEMA, his proposals are about getting aid to the states a lot quicker, and that saves lives... That should always be the bottom line... To think that there is only one way to do something is very narrow minded... He never said federal aid would be abolished...

Reply

Arthur Post

Marybeth,
You mean aren't, and Obama doesn't vote for bills; but it's true that in the worst phases of the great recession, there was an additional middle class tax cut on top of the major cuts of 2001 and 2003, to provise some help during the very tough times, according to the President. Those additional cuts and the extension of the '01 and '03 cuts impacted the deficit far less than 2001-2008, about 6% of the total deficit today, check it out. Obama has proposed ending those cuts for those making >$250,000 many times, returning to the top rates of the Clinton years, as we have had growth for 40 months, the stock market has rebounded, etc. If we were able to return the top tax rates to the pre-2001 levels, with the cuts that the administration has already put in place, the deficit would be wiped out in five years, and the Republicans know it. However, this gets no traction in the Boehner-led House, mostly because of the heavy influence of the Tea Party reps and the pledges to Grover Norquist by nearly all Republicans. They are happy to do his bidding before doing what's best for their constituents, which would be working to find some kind of budget/deficit compromise.

The Obama-Biden tax plan hikes the small biz tax rate from 35% now (world's second highest rate) to over 40% next year. Obama says “only” 3% of small biz owners will be affected by his tax rate hike. A huge lie. This is a tax increase on 1 million successful small biz (i.e. 3% of the 30 million small biz tax returns filed annually).

The Obama-Biden plan will raise taxes on a majority of small biz profits and hit those companies which employ the majority of Americans. Here’s how:

Unlike corporations, biz profits flow through to owners. Owner pays taxes on her small biz by adding profits to her income tax form. Therefore, personal income taxes are the same thing as small biz taxes.

The Obama-Biden plan to hike the top two marginal income tax rates (from 33 and 35% today to 36 and 39.6%, respectively) is a hike in America’s small biz tax rate. This does not include Obamacare’s 3.8 percent small biz surtax.

Per the IRS, most small biz profits face taxation in households making more than $200K per year. IRS tracks 2 types of small biz income: sole proprietors, and “pass-through” entities like partnerships and S-corps. There are 30 million tax returns reporting small biz income. Owners report business profits of $590 billion. $477 billion faced taxation in households making more than $200K a year.

Why is unemployment so high under Obama compared to past recoveries?

Because small biz owners, the ones who create the new jobs, remain on strike.

Marybeth

Arthur you're going to have to prove that one. Obama and Casey both voted in 2008 on the federal budget, TARP and war funding. That makes them responsible for the budget every bit as much as the President. You can go on and on with your rhetoric but except for the last 3 years, the Senate and House passes a budget and it is signed by the President. That is how our system works. No one chamber or person can make it happen without the others. Responsibilty starts with taking some.

I like how you changed the topic. Let's say taxes went back up for some group of people. You do remember in 2010 how Casey and Obama approved the tax cuts that you are complaining about again. In any event, new tax revenues come in and are say $75 billion a year. That's good. I can live with that but we still have about another trillion to make up to balance the budget and not add any more debts right?

Where do you want to start cutting?

I wonder how much a Republican congress in 94 helped keep Clinton in line as did a booming economy before the dot com bust. For the record, Bush's deficits over 8 years do not equal Obama's over the past 4 and before you get your panties in a bunch, both Democrats and Republicans in Congress did this. That's right Obama, Casey, Biden, Specter all voted for these budgets. They made it happen. If annual spending is $1 trillion more now than revenues right now, how do you pin this on Bush?

Have you even looked at the budget and how the money is spent?

From 2009 to 2010, there was an increase in Welfare spending of $283 Billion.

Now that times are lean and we've run up a debt of $16 trillion while domestic needs go a-begging (one example: the estimated $2-3 trillion needed to update our decaying infrastructure), it's time to end the spending caused by our extravagant foreign policy. We spend, by choice, more than the rest of the world COMBINED on National Defense, Homeland Security, Foreign Aid Designed to Gain the Cooperation of Other Countries, Nation Building, and Veterans Affairs. $3.6 T spent like this
$700 B defense
$610 B government
$800 B Social security
$740 B medicare and medicaid
$630 B welfare
$220 B interest

Should we just fire all the men and women in the military and defense sectors and add to the unemployment? Get real

How about Medicare, SS and welfare spending equal $2.2 trillion by themselves

in 2017 this total will grow to $3.4 trillion a 50% increase. Check it out yourself

Who thinks we should let government spending increase 50% from todays trillion dollar shortfall level?

One last comment before I get some shuteye

Everyone talks about how Bill Clinton left a budget surplus. What is true is that in the last 2 years of his presidency, the Federal Government took in more than it spent - HOORAY!!! This was with a Republican Congress (House and Senate). Things were looking good.....then along came 911 unless someone forgot.

What everyone does forget is that during Clinton's 8 years total years, 6 had DEFICITS. Yep, Clinton the GREAT created deficits too.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, from the day Clinton took office (January 20, 1993) to September 5 of the year he sought reelection (1996), the national debt rose from $4.188 trillion to $5.226 trillion -- an increase of $1.038 trillion. During Clinton's entire 8-year presidency, the national debt rose from $4.188 trillion to $5.728 trillion—an increase of $1.540 trillion.

If you divide $1.54 trillion by 8 you get about $200 B a year average deficit.

Bill Clinton did a lot of good along with the Republicans in Congress yet they still added to our children's debt bill.

Here's the kicker....spending....in 2001, the governent spent $1.9 trillion. In 2012, the government spent $3.7 trillion. An increase in spending by nearly 100%.

Spending nearly doubled!! DOUBLED!!

Revenues 2001 - $2.0 T
Revenues 2012 - $2.4 T

2007 for comparison - deficit $177 B right within Clinton's average annual total
Rev - $2.56 T (highest total ever)
Exp - $2.73 T

Can I ask all the Republicans posting here, what has your party done in the last 4 years to get the economy going again?
Why are you against equal pay for women?
Why do you think its ok to allow employers to decide if health insurance covers birth control?
Why have they spent so much money defending DOMA when it as been knocked down by several state courts?
Why where they against ending dont ask dont tell, and give me a reason other than your fake religion that you dont really practice anyway
Why are you against gay marriage, and why dont you ban divorce if marriage is so sacred?
I could go on for days and do not quote the bible on any of this, cause i have acutally read that and honestly it if full of alot of crap

Obama's biggest lie:
Obamacare's Hidden Taxes
Taxation: The high bench has confirmed that ObamaCare's individual mandate is a massive tax on the American middle class. But let's not forget the 20 other new taxes that are embedded in the law.

Though President Obama never sold it as a tax hike, the Supreme Court ruled the mandate is exactly that. Unfortunately, the majority argued it's legal under Congress' taxing authority.

Forcing citizens to buy health insurance "is absolutely not a tax increase," Obama insisted in 2009. Earlier, he assured the public that raising taxes on the middle class to support his health care plan was "the last thing we need in an economy like this." "Folks are already having a tough enough time," Obama added.

Morning David - what's confusing about math and budget process? Clinton spent too much. Bush spent too much. Obama really spends too much. The Congress under each passed the budgets...well only 1 for Obama....Obama and Casey are responsible for the deficits and debt because they authorized too much spending.

Maybe you are confused by how spending too much creates deficits and that is the problem?

Don't get your hopes up. Expecting victory and actually achieving it are two different things.

Updated election forecasting model still points to Romney win, University of Colorado study says

The state-by-state economic data used in their model have been available since 1980. When these data were applied retroactively to each election year, the model correctly classifies all presidential election winners, including the two years when independent candidates ran strongly: 1980 and 1992. It also correctly estimates the outcome in 2000, when Al Gore won the popular vote but George W. Bush won the election through the Electoral College.

There are a lot of good points here. This election is close. I would like to know how anybody could vote for a president who has such chaos in his organization that four Americans begged for help to save their lives and no help came. Now that we shine a light on it, it is hard to believe that the President himself was unaware of the danger and need for support. If he didn't know it's because he has not been attending the security briefings, he has been campaigning instead. I can see there are two sides to the other arguments pro/con each candidate, but in this one case there is just no answer that satisfies me.
For the sake of those four Americans and in honor of their memory, I will not cast a vote for this president - I will cast a vote against him and hope we have a new President in January.
Obama has the blood of those four Americans on his hands. He says someone will be hold accountable (after the election). I hope we beat him to it.

Out of all those who honestly believe that the government should not spend more than it brings in, how many of you have outstanding debt in the form of home mortgages, car payments, credit card debt, school debt, medical debt, or other loans?

Reply

Marybeth

Having debt isn't the same as spending more than you take in. Debt is not a bad thing if you pay it back or own something at the end like the car or house or even college degree. The national debt has increased by $7 trillion under Obama. Nothing is being paid back. It's an interest only scam like all of those mortgages that went belly up.

The majority of the spending isn't even on things that we would own (do Obama phones count?) such as food stamps. Think about this. The government borrows money from China to give out food stamps.

A budget deficit means more was spent than received. A budget deficit or surplus would then either add to or subtract from the debt.

in 2001 spending was $1.9 Trillion and today it is $3.8 trillion.

As long as what you take in pays for the debt, it works. This is not what the federal government does. They borrow money to pay the interest on the borrowed money.

Borrowing money to pay for day to day expenses is the textbook definition of being insolvent. If you are doing this, you will not survive for very long.

@Marybeth: I find your numbers interesting, and misleading.
you said "in 2001 spending was $1.9 Trillion and today it is $3.8 trillion. " I did some digging and found this
" In the 2009 fiscal year — the last of George W. Bush’s presidency — federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion." Thats from the wall street journal. (http://articles.marketwatch.com/2012-05-22/commentary/31802270_1_spending-federal-budget-drunken-sailor) Why are you lying?
you also said "The majority of the spending isn't even on things that we would own (do Obama phones count?) such as food stamps." The money we borrowed from China paid for the increased military spending due to the 2 wars we are/were in. The Obama phones is the biggest lie of all. The phones you are talking about is from the "Telecommunications Act of 1996", which is not funded from taxpayer money, its funded by the telecommunication companies. They just turn around and add an extra fee to your bill for it.
You are just like your candidate, just making up stuff to get elected.

I never said the problems didn't exist before he got to be President. I have repeatedly said, he was a big part of creating the spending problems along with Bob Casey, Joe Biden and all the others who voted for reckless spending and debt that we have no ability to pay back. Should we just keep doing it this way? You know the failed economic policies of Obama these past 4 years? Stop with the emotional, immature comments. Go read some budgets and voting records.

I am not alone!!

The latest Politico battleground poll, released earlier this week, shows Romney with a massive 19-point lead over Obama among suburban voters. Surprisingly, it's actually one point higher than his lead among rural voters. Obama leads among urban voters by 29 points. In 2008, Obama won the suburban vote by 2 points. The 21-point swing away from him makes his reelection very difficult.

Obama's approval rating among suburban voters is deeply underwater. Just 42% approve of the job he is doing, against 57% who disapprove. A staggering 52% disapprove strongly. Romney has a net 23 approval rating among suburban voters, 59% approving with 36% disapproving.

Over the past 30 years, no one has won the presidency without winning the suburban vote.

Robert - I showed that Federal spending nearly doubled from 2001 to 2012. Prove me wrong if you think I am.

I showed that Obama, Casey, Biden et al all voted for Bush's Budget in 2008. They are responsible for their votes and Bush is responsible for signing it. I know it is convenient to only blame Bush but unless you can point me to where in the constitution the President has such powers.

In 2010, Obama praised the very same spending budget that his party passed. One year you say its bad and than magically the next the same spending is worthy of praise. And I am the liar? LOL!

Defense
2008 - $636B
2012 - $709B
Medicare
2008- $386B
2012- $478B
Welfare
2008- $324B
2012- $635B

Here is OBAMA'S 2013 budget summary.

Spending = $3.8 Trillion
Revenues = $2.9 Trillion

DEFICIT = $900 B

Shall we Blame Bush for this $900 Billion budget miss?

I can only chalk it up to "Bad Boyfriend Syndrome". It is so "no matter what". My friend's eldest daughter had this once. No matter what the guy says or does it's still the old "but I love him" statement followed by the "he is really great. you just don't see the side of him that I see". Actions speak loudest and his actions have gotten us nowhere.

The more actual facts we Romney supporters post, the more Obama supporters nitpic on a the difference between 16 trillion in debt versus 16.27 trillion, etc.

I'm thinking... and I could be wrong... that there are no more undecided voters visiting these threads. Just not seeing anyone asking legit questions.
