Man Shoots at Burglars in His Wynnewood Home, Police Say

No residents were injured. The burglars fled and it is unknown whether they were hit, according to police.

Would-be burglars of a Wynnewood home fled Thursday afternoon after the homeowner fired a handgun at them, Lower Merion Township spokesman Tom Walsh said.

Walsh said police believe two or three males entered the back door of a house on the 1200 block of Remington Road, after they had knocked on the front door and received no answer. The men then encountered the homeowner, who fired an unknown number of shots at them.

It was unclear whether the men were hit. The homeowner was briefly handcuffed after he exited the front door holding the handgun, Walsh said, until police confirmed his identity.

The invaders left the scene in a white car, and shortly thereafter Narberth Police began pursuit. According to Narberth Police officer in charge Bob Yantorno, the chase began on the 200 block of East Wynnewood Road and continued to the 1100 block of 53rd Street in Philadelphia, where police lost the car. Yantorno said the men were driving either a Nissan or Oldsmobile. The car appeared to be new.

Yantorno added he was never within a block of the vehicle, so was unable to record a license plate number. Narberth Police are studying video of the pursuit for information that can advance the investigation.

The neighbors were rattled. A woman on the same block told Patch she heard the shots, then saw the homeowner handcuffed outside. Another neighbor, a resident of the 1300 block of Remington, said she didn't hear any shots and added that she has typically left her door unlocked in 25 years of living in the neighborhood.

Remington Road closed between Lancaster Avenue and Haverford Road from about 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. while police investigated the scene
