Police: Beware of Vandalism, Forced-Entry Thefts from Cars

A number of cars were broken into by smashing out windows, and others were vandalized throughout the township recently.

Residents should take extra precautions about leaving valuable goods unsecured in Ardmore and Wynnewood, according to Lower Merion Police, after a number of thefts were reported in the area.

Lower Merion Police issued an alert on Monday, Sept. 27, about several thefts from vehicles in the area. Three police reports between Sept. 23 and Sept. 26 record instances of vehicles broken into through smashing in a car window and items taken.

The first reported crime occurred between 7:45 – 8:10 p.m. in the Genuardi's grocery store parking lot in Wynnewood, according to police. A window was broken out and a backpack left on a seat was taken, police said. The value of stolen goods was not recorded.

The second incident on Sept. 24 occured between 7 – 9:45 p.m. in the A parking lot of Lankenau Hospital, according to police. The driver's side window was broken, and a Hugo Boss suit, Brooks Brothers dress shirt and tie and New Balance running sneakers were taken from the seat of the car, police said.

The most recent theft occured outside of Dakota Pizza in Wynnewood on Sept. 26, according to police reports. A Subaru was broken into by smashing out the driver's side window, and an empty pocketbook was taken from the vehicle's seat, police reported.

All three incidents involved broken window entry and items taken that were visible from outside of the car, according to police reports. No suspects have yet been arrested for the crimes.

Combined with a rash of car vandalism reports – slashed tires, vulgar words scratched into exteriors, etc – on the western end of Lower Merion Township, police have advised residents to secure their vehicles, park in well-lit places and report any suspicious activity by calling 610-649-1000 or 9-1-1.
